Which tbf, why wouldn't Sony expect that? Buy Bungie for nearly $4 billion, well aware that Bungie's next project is Marathon, and Destiny 2 was still making bank at that time. It's entirely fair that Sony expected Marathon to be a blockbuster. Currently, Marathon is looking like a good success, but not a blockbuster. That being said, I really hope Sony lets Marathon continue, even if it's a smaller community, as long as there is a continual dedicated playerbase playing the game, it deserves to be supported.

With how volatile the acquisition has been for Sony, perhaps they adjusted their expectations for Marathon, and these numbers are good for them.

I do hope Sony gives this game a chance to succeed in the long run. Player retention has been decent so far and the user reviews have been strong. It would be short sighted for Sony to wind down Marathon's support. It could be one of those games that turn around in the long run after a few updates similar to Destiny 2. However, I do think if Sony had to choose between starting development of Destiny 3 (as its been rumored) or continue supporting Marathon, they're going with the former.

I hate to think like this, but I wouldn't be surprised if Bungie getting cut down 40% since being acquired, including the separate studio being spun off, was the fat trimming to help make Bungie more financially viable if Marathon wasn't a blockbuster. Because right now, Destiny 2 is barely making much money. It's currently at #200 in the top sellers on Steam in global revenue, which includes microtransactions and expansion purchases. I can't even find it on the PS Store. I stopped scrolling after a while lol. So Bungie is betting its studio's future on Marathon's success.

One thing is for sure though. If Sony decides that they would rather Bungie start on a Destiny 3, Bungie will either have to outsource continued Marathon support or leave a skeleton crew to keep supporting it. The amount of content Destiny needs is unlike pretty much anything else on the market outside of MMO's like World of Warcraft. And with how many employees Bungie has lost, they just wouldn't be able to do it properly.

Forsaken, for example, is the biggest expansion in Destiny's history, and it needed the combined effort of Bungie, along with the Activision studios High Moon Studios and Vicarious Visions. Even with no other projects at the time, Bungie still needed a lot of help. It would take a Forsaken-level expansion, if not more, that Bungie would need to make for a Destiny 3 at launch.

At least we know the likes of Nixxes and XDev are available if that ends up being the case lol
