I'm playing GoW R Valhalla, and as much as I love the added story, I absolutely loathe the gameplay loop. I think it's my first rougelike and honestly, it's going to be my last.

I really just don't know what to do... I think I've completed the loop twice? Everything after that has me dying either at the final encounter or pre-final encounter even with 2 resurrection stones. Maybe I'm just not spending enough mid-run but every single buff I have the option of choosing is just not great for the final encounter at all.

It's a very frustrating experience because it doesn't feel like I'm making any ground at all.

Which difficulty are you playing? Playing on normal I literally died just a single time in an optional boss because I got greedy with the last attacks trying to finish it off.

You have to beat the loop 4 times if I remember well, but the full loop only start being available after 2 or 3 story loops that end midway, you'll definitely know when you are into the full loop parts, believe me.

If you are already in the part of needing to speedrun the minibosses, you have to focus on being quick because the longer you stay there the harder it gets. Get the souls you need and go away.

I focusedly mostly on a single weapon each run, just making sure to get as many different slot runic attacjs as possible. Example: if I already have a light runic attack for the leviathan axe and are presented with a choice about another one that is better than what I have, or a heavy runic attack instead, I would choose the heavy one, then focus on runic attacks from other weapons, because being able to constantly cycle runic attacks means you have a lot of quick damage to deliver most of the time.

There are also 2 kinds of challenges from frost and fire swords you'll find in the map, which makes things harder if you focus on completing them and not just fighting the easiest way possible, if it's too hard you can leave them be, but I was doing those all the times anyway.

I think I did about 12 full loops or so, because there is a bit of lore to listen to in the next 9 or so loops after beating the game (you don't really have to do these, tho), and it was always pretty easy, as long and you keep improving your permanent stats it gets easier.

There is at least two very important events story wise in this DLC, so if you still end up giving up, make sure to watch it somewhere.

I'm not good at rougelikes, nor was I that good on God of War, but it was still decently easy, and IMO the combat is really fun so I had a blast playing it. Give it some more time.

Thanks for the write-up! I'll def see how it goes this weekend before I make any decisions. You are def right about the Runic approach, I think. I'm going to make that my priority for tonight and hope it works out this time haha

Around the Network

We are 3 days away from January 1st so what are 3 games you wish PlayStation reveals next year? Mine are:

- BluePoint new game and it's an rpg
- Sly remake
- Infamous remaster

I mention BP over any other studio because I'm not expecting something specific from studios like Santa Monica or Housemarque but I do from BP. I know it's wrong to expect specific things but I really dig the concept art PS Malaysia was working on and in theory they are working with BP so whenever they show what is next I'm in for a great time or a big disappointment LOL, if it's an rpg or not would be only a plus. But hey at least I'm not part of the people who for some reason think they are working in a Dragoon remake, a Dragoon remake would be cool but they maid it very clear long ago that they were working in something new.

Talking about Sly and Infamous, I just love those 2 franchises and I believe they have a good chance to appeal if remade/remaster.

Bluepoint

Santa Monica New IP

If second party counts, I'm looking forward to Sony publishing a From Software game.

If it doesn't count, I'd love to see some remasters (Bloodborne, Infamous, Killzone, Resistance)

So, I've warmed up a bit to Valhalla. Sat night 3 losses in a row. Sun night 2 wins and then 1 loss.
While I have a better understanding of how different systems are working together, the entire mode still feels like it really depends on what unlocks are given to you in your run. In the 2 I won, I just got a great set of stuff. In the one I lost, even with a reroll, my desk was so horrid that I knew I stood no chance at the end, and I was right LOL

hopefully good fortunes continue.

The 3rd and "happy" ending of Ys Origin is arguably the saddest lol.

It's happy in the sense that there's a lingering feeling of bliss due to that "Termination" arrangement in the final fight.

Just so my list can be different, I won't include a Sly remake/remaster, because that would absolutely be in my top 3 lol. Instead my list would be

- SOCOM return
- Santa Monica's new IP by Cory Barlog
- WipeOut return

Outside of Counter-Strike, the tactical shooter genre is pretty untapped with niche but dedicated playerbases with the likes of ARMA, Squad, Insurgency, and Hell Let Loose, but most importantly, they're all only multiplayer. Tom Clancy games used to own the single player tactical shooter genre, but Ubisoft has buried that entire franchise. SOCOM was really the only other notable tactical shooter franchise, and with Sony continuing their live service ambitions, I feel SOCOM would be able to scratch a serious tactical itch that reaches to both single player and multiplayer audiences.

Been constantly leaked that Cory Barlog has been working on a new IP for years now and I feel 2025 is the year we'll finally get the unveil. Cory is one of the few named developers I'll always follow.

WipeOut is flat out my favorite PlayStation franchise. So this is complete dream wishing but been playing a lot of the Omega collection and been dropping into the OG trilogy as well as Pure/Pulse on PC emulators, and I would love to have a brand-new entry. Could also work on Sony's live service ambitions lol. Variety is the spice of life after all.

Until Dawn 2 - I'm hoping it's UD x SH in terms of gameplay. Keep the choices/ unique gameplay scenes of UD but add in minute-to-minute gameplay that resembles something like SH2. I think marrying both gameplay elements seamlessly would be fantastic.

Bluepoint - not sure what game it will be, but if it is a GoW spin-off I'm interested to know more.

Media Molecule - hopefully full-fledged sequel to Tren. Whatever the game is, hopefully it runs on Dreams engine and Dreams can live on through other games.

Ys Origin (and YS 1 & 2) SPOILERS below:

It's objectively the happy ending, at least certain characters manage to survive. But ignorance is bliss. Toal and Reah shouldered too much and suffered in all endings, but you cared less about it when you didn't know their connection, feelings, and other details.

The poor goddesses and my boy Toal deserved better than to get fate-stomped lol. Hopefully Feena somehow reunites with Adol in the future.
