It feels like there are so many issues with long dev times.

- hard to market a new console with few games. (PS5 pro)

- makes it impossible to capitalize on trends.

- hard to ensure new games on a routine basis

- hard to get people excited for a sequel that is 8 years out.

- hard to align your games with a TV show, with cross media being more popular.

It's kind of absurd how some of the most standout games came out 4 years ago now.

I think development has to change somehow.

And to that point. It would've been great if Sony had a major AAA exclusive first party game ready to launch to show off the Pro.

Just show whatever Naughty Dog has, even if it's 10 years away at this point.  If their are no first party games to show, games like Dragon Age, COD, Silent Hill etc better have some great Playstation 5 pro upgrades.

I'm seeing the rounds that Days Gone could be the "less exciting" remaster that Sony is working on. *sigh* although I did thoroughly enjoy Days Gone!

Wow, I was thinking something like Gravity Rush could at least be exciting for some people.

I can't imagine anyone asking for Days Gone.

And I get that a lot of times these are easy projects to keep people employed, but why not go further? Remaster some PS2 games!

Days Gone is generic trash created by a Maga moron. Let it fail again.

Days Gone or Gravity Rush REMAKE'S (not remastered) would get me to open my wallet. Horizon/GoW would not. There is no reason to remaster those games. How is it that Naughty Dog and Bend dont even have anything to SHOW at this point? Neither has had anything this gen (maybe media molecule as well?). Can they really be more than 2 years out? Are they going to skip the PS5 entirely? Its becoming a joke at this point. This is MS during the xbox one crap all over again.

People talked about how hard the PS3 was to develop for, yet new games in franchises were churned out every 3 years or so. I get that games have gotten more complex but how did we go from 3 years to 8 years so quickly?

Yeah I would say 2 years out sounds about right. 5-6 years is pretty standard now. In Naughty Dog's case, it was a very sizeable team that was working on Factions 2 that worked on it for years, but now that it's cancelled, they're retooling the team to work on something else. Not to mention, Naughty Dog also worked on TLOU 1 and 2 for PS5, which of course took resources to make.

In Bend's case, I expect to see what they're working on next year. Timing about lines up for a AAA open world game that they're supposedly working on, seemingly with a live service aspect to it.

But these games now cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make and thousands of people working on them. We are the point where a single studio could make only 1 new AAA game in a single console generation. It's mainly why Sony is so reliant on all these remasters. To fill in the gaps. That's also a big reason why implementing AI into development is something many companies are wanting to take advantage of to shorten dev times and budgets.

This was always going to be the end result in the chase of photorealism and bigger and better. That's also why I REALLY want Astro Bot to succeed. A small team overall with a modest budget and took only 3 years to make.

Looks like PS6 could potentially have a Series X/S setup or console/handheld setup.

I mean Bend almost missed the PS4 gen. They launched a game in 2012, then launched Days Gone in 2019. Basically an entire generation. (PS4 launched in 2013, PS5 launched in 2020. So if they were a year off, Days Gone could have been a launch PS5 game.)

In a lot of cases, those games actually had longer development times. They just started while something else was getting out the door. Like the Last of Us started in ~2009, and was released in 2013. So basically 4 years during the PS3 gen.

And we sometimes still get sequels taking about that long. God of War Ragnarok (2018 - 2022).

So, is it mainly the graphics that caused the more than doubling it takes to put out new games? They also all seem to have larger teams, and I was under the impression Naughty Dog and other large studios were working on more than 1 game at a time (Insomniac has done Miles/Ratchet/SM2 all in the first 4 years of the PS5). I feel like something went very, very wrong. Probably the push for live service in all the studios.

I dont think people in the PS3 era were saying "We need more complex games!" I know I wasn't. I like better graphics, sure, but I've been taken aback by the delay in Sony's first party output.
