With games hitting a maximum of $80 later in the year, Microsoft sources confirmed to me that, games will still be priced on a scale to reflect their scope, as is the case today. Smaller games could still come in at $50 or less, for example, while AAA big-budget titles like a new Call of Duty are doubtlessly going to hit that maximum price tier.

It's most likely a reaction to the new "maximum" set by Nintendo, as well as Microsoft's internal knowledge that GTA 6 is almost certainly going to come in at $80. Imminently upcoming Xbox games like DOOM: The Dark Ages will escape the price increase, but whatever is coming for Xbox in the fall likely won't. Expect other third-party publishers to follow suit, very soon

This is going to eventually happen across all gaming products which are subject to 'market conditions' (ie tariffs).

Was expected to happen. Is now happening. Will be happening more.

$80 titles were obviously happening the second that Nintendo decided to start doing them but in all reality, if it wasn't Nintendo who went first, it would have been someone else to open the floodgates, like I think even if Nintendo didn't increase to $80 there was still absolutely zero chance that Take-Two wouldn't for GTA 6 and they'd signal to all other publishers to do the same.

Hardware increase was obvious too, Xbox hardware is made in China, they already make a loss on Xbox hardware, Xbox won't take an even bigger loss because of Trump's stupidity. Sony will do the same soon (and have already increased in Europe). Once the stockpiles of already built hardware are out the window and the new stockpiles come in which have been hit by tariffs.

Though yes, this will obviously hurt Xbox hardware by a lot, their choice is take massive losses or sell less. People are struggling to pay for basic goods like food and energy, many sure as shit won't spend this much on hardware devices. This must be the first gen where hardware prices actually went up multiple times, I'm glad I got an Xbox Series X at launch (and Game Pass) because this is frustrating as hell.

Thanks Trump. Orange Twat.

$80 games from Microsoft, like with Nintendo, will only be for their biggest releases (ie Call of Duty). Smaller releases (ie South of Midnight) will still launch at a lower price.

A U.S. judge just nuked Apple's ability to collect fees on app store payments, opening up mobile game developers to use their own systems.

This could help further Microsoft's mobile aspirations on iOS a great deal: www.windowscentral.com/gaming/xboxs... #Xbox

the judge in Epic v. Apple has just put Apple on blast over its anticompetitive behavior. Apple is no longer allowed to collect fees on purchases made outside apps, and Apple might face possible criminal contempt proceedings www.theverge.com/news/659246/...

5 year old console increases to $100 above launch price.

We are in the timeline of all time.

And yep Nintendo has accelerated the jump to $80 games.

The Series X 2TB currently has a higher RRP than the PS5 Pro lol.

Not that it isn't bullshit but they probably "only" accelerated it by 6 months, Lol. GTA 6 will be $80 at minimum and then all the Sports titles would have immediately followed and then Call of Duty, etc. But still yeah, they opened the floodgates before GTA 6 which was a surprise, I said at the time that everyone else would follow, I just thought everyone would wait for GTA 6 first to avoid the negative PR.

But it's still bullshit, I know folk will say inflation and all that and game prices haven't increased enough to match but the $70 increase was likely only a short while ago, Lol. Plus it ignores how much people are struggling nowadays for basic goods, inflation can be spoken about all they want but fact is people are struggling a lot lately, financially.

I dislike corps making billions in profits increasing prices, at the same time, the reason why is plain for all to see and there's one obvious big person to blame for a lot of this in giving corporations the excuse and "justification" needed. It's insane that we can say buying a console at launch was more financially smart than 5 years after launch now...

Issue is Xbox hardware sales will absolutely crater now, though considering how small they're already selling I'm not sure they'd care that much, I think they honestly don't care about reaching much more than over 30m. Their choice is sell hardware at a huge loss (which is already struggling to sell much) or break even sales in far lesser numbers and squeeze profits elsewhere (3rd party).
