Microsoft Responds to FTC Attempt to Block Activision Blizzard Deal

It is therefore unsurprising that after nearly a full year investigating this transaction, receiving millions of Microsoft and Activision documents, and speaking to over a dozen witnesses, there is no evidence that Xbox intends to take Call of Duty away from PlayStation—or any platform at all. No emails, no text messages, no testimony. There is one reason for that: Xbox does not intend to take that step

Xbox has made this same offer to other competitors, and at least one (Nintendo) has accepted to date. Sony refuses to deal. But a vertical merger causes anticompetitive harm only when the acquired input is "essential." If Call of Duty were truly essential, Sony would have no reason to refuse

Its vision for the transaction is simple: Xbox wants to grow its presence in mobile gaming, and three quarters of Activision’s gamers and more than a third of its revenues come from mobile offerings.

Boring one this time, most of it is just standard legal response, Microsoft denies/confirms allegations, see you in court, Lol.

I feel like it always needs to be clarified who exactly are they referring to when they say Bethesda. You read all the comments, everyone is assuming either they’re talking about Bethesda Game Studios mentioning Starfield, Elder Scrolls VI, and Fallout 5 or they’re talking about 3 upcoming games from Bethesda Softworks other internal studios.

They say Zenimax, Tom puts in Bethesda.

Too little information really, it could be 3 unannounced titles hence the redaction or it could be 3 titles close to release (Starfield, Redfall, Something Else) or it could be all of their announced titles (Starfield, Redfall, ES6) but I don't know why they would redact that, plus that would hint Indiana Jones is multiplatform or it could be a combination of the two, 3 unannounced (or announced) titles that are close to release.

I will say though that I'm about 80% sure that the Zenimax New IP (Kestrel) will be multiplatform if it's an MMO which I've always been adamant it would be.

Scenario #1 - Three Announced Titles

  • Announced Titles - Starfield, The Elder Scrolls VI, Indiana Jones, Redfall.
  • Confirmed Exclusive - Starfield, Redfall.
  • Heavily Implied Exclusive - The Elder Scrolls VI.
  • Conclusion: Indiana Jones is Multiplatform.

Scenario #2 - Three Titles (Releasing Soon).

  • Possibilities - Starfield (2023), Redfall (2023), MachineGames or Tango (2023 - 2024).

Scenario #3 - Three Unannounced Titles.

  • Assumption - Zenimax's New MMO is Multiplatform.
  • Fallout isn't in Development.
  • Assuming Roundhouse isn't developing anything of their own.
  • Possibilities - ID Software's Next Title, Tango Gameworks John Johanas Project and Wolfenstein 3?

Those marketshare breakdowns for 2021 are interesting. Taking a quick look we have our estimates within a couple percent of the percentages Microsoft provided for the big 3. Though, what data is Microsoft using for Sony and Nintendo? Shipped? Sell-through? Hard to say how useful it is other than a guideline to figure out roughly how close we are to Xbox Series X|S sales, which we are definitely close looking at this.

I have always respected the estimates.  Also the adjustments as they come.  Great work as always @trunkswd

Not surprising. Can’t wait for game journalists to write articles about how scumy this practice is. Jk lol, of course they won’t give a shit.
