Forums - Sony - 20GB, 60GB and 80GB PS3 Owners-How good is the backwards compatibility?

I have a 60GB. When I got it, all my games had small sound glitches. For example, a high ping sound would be heard throughout the battles for FFX. That all seemed to be resolved through an update and no more high sounds for my games. Also, I had troubles with FFVII at some points during battles. This black box would appear, but it seemed to be resolved. After that, I had no more problems. You might want to go to the link ecurbj provided and look for the games you own. Sony is working with publishers so that new released PS2 games can work on the PS3, so don't worry about Persona 3 FES.

Wow, out of the four games I mentioned getting, only King of Fighter XI is compatible with the 80 GB. I may just have to spring for the 60 GB if I keep getting no search results. Most of the games I like are niche titles and those tend to be the overlooked ones when software BC is concerned. I'm having a similiar situation with my 360 over many Sega games. I might just have to pick up a PS2 or a 60 GB because even Soul Nomad and the World Eaters and Grim Grimoire don't show up and Odin Sphere has save data problems.

Yeah, BC is a deal breaker for me in addition to the price, if they continue with the 40gig not being BC i will never get a PS3, I mean, how much would it cost Sony to put in one little piece of software that has already been developed for the PS3 80 and the PS3 60pal? I may pick one up end of gen like i did with GameCube, but i doubt I'll ever see one for $30 used like the Cube LOL.

I have a 20 GB, never had a single problem with BC, except in the case of Silent Hill 1.

We'll miss you George.

The only benefit of having PS2 games in the PS3, is just the PS3 upscales the PS2 games. Not an important feature by any means. And another benefit would be having the PS2 inside the PS3.

If you really want to play PS2 games I would strongly suggest buying a PS2 Slim and having that. There you won't have to deal with the problems that some PS2 games would have on the 80GB PS3.

I have a PS2 and I might be buying a PS2 Slim sometime in the summer. I hate emulation. I'm playing Doom 3 (an original Xbox game) on the Xbox 360 and I notice some graphics corruption and the title hangs at the start screen. Weird problems like that makes me want to own the original console.

I just don't trust the 60GB now because the majority of them are used. So you can do the following:

1) 80GB PS3 and purchase a PS2 Slim
2) 40GB PS3 and purchase a PS2 Slim
3) Used 60GB PS3 and be able to play all PS2 games

The choice is up to you sir.

I have a 60 gb, and I have about 20 PS2 games I picked up as used, I have yet to encounter any problem with BC.

games I have:

R&C deadlocked, Socom II, Hot Shot 3, Kingdom Heart II, God of War, FFXII, Devil May Cry 3....

Although I have to say, After playing Demo for DMC4, I can't stand to play DMC3 on HDTV, I had to literally move my PS3 to a SD TV to play it on that. It just looks ugly as hell.

Because the 60GB plays all PS2 games.

Well going off his profile, he has a PAL 60 GB which is equivalent to the US 80 GB.

20GB: 95% PS2 Games
60GB: 95% PS2 Games
80GB: 80% PS2 Games
40GB: Does not play PS2 Games, but plays PS1 Games

The 20GB and 60GB has the PS2 Emotion Engine.
The 80GB has the PS2 Graphics Chip, no PS2 Emotion Engine which results in emulation.
The 40GB does not include the PS2 Graphics Chip or PS2 Emotion Engine.

I haven't ran into any problems with my 80GB PS3. Only game that gave me problems was Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando. On Sony's site it says that the game slows down on the PS3. Basically the framerate drops when playing that game.

Other games work, like the MGS: Essistenial Collection and Devil May Cry series.

If you have any games you want to play on your PS3 that are PS2 games I suggest you use this feature that Sony put on its site :http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus

That link gives you the option to see if the PS2 game is backwards compatiable with the game you selected. If its not shown up then its not. If it is then it might show the problems assicoiated with the game or it might be without problems.

80 gig really = 80%

Wow.

Lots of peole have it at fifty

Linky?

ummm....a link to 50% first would help?

I don't need to provide a link, playstation.com always have threads about 80GB PS3 BC with the PS2. So I suggest heading over there since you want to have a truth behind 80GB PS3 BC.

Yeah, I just bought a Gamecube a couple of weeks ago at Gamestop for $30. Awesome purchase and I might buy a Xbox this week. Because there is some old Xbox games I want to play on the original Xbox than playing on a emulated Xbox 360.

are games like Guitar Hero BC?
