Forums - Sony - 20GB, 60GB and 80GB PS3 Owners-How good is the backwards compatibility?

I'm going to get a PS3 around MGS4 time but I have a question. How good is the software BC in the 80 GB? Are there limitations with certain games that have been revealed or is it pretty much 100%? Let me know of your experiences and what games work, what games don't and any links you may have from others and their opinions.

I want to get the MGS4 bundle, but the BC is sorta a dealbreaker for me, and I may want to rather go on eBay and pick up an old 60GB if the software BC is not very good. Honest opinions only please. This is not meant to be flamebait, but are my own purchasing concerns. Thanks.

20GB: 95% PS2 Games
60GB: 95% PS2 Games
80GB: 80% PS2 Games
40GB: Does not play PS2 Games, but plays PS1 Games

The 20GB and 60GB has the PS2 Emotion Engine.
The 80GB has the PS2 Graphics Chip, no PS2 Emotion Engine which results in emulation.
The 40GB does not include the PS2 Graphics Chip or PS2 Emotion Engine.

I haven't ran into any problems with my 80GB PS3. Only game that gave me problems was Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando. On Sony's site it says that the game slows down on the PS3. Basically the framerate drops when playing that game.

Other games work, like the MGS: Essistenial Collection and Devil May Cry series.

If you have any games you want to play on your PS3 that are PS2 games I suggest you use this feature that Sony put on its site :http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus

That link gives you the option to see if the PS2 game is backwards compatiable with the game you selected. If its not shown up then its not. If it is then it might show the problems assicoiated with the game or it might be without problems.

I have the 60 GB PS3 Pal version and at the moment a lot of my games work well.

Except the old ones like Rayman 2 Revolution.

But after all with so many games coming out these days and already on the market I think you will not play many PS2 games anymore.

I have a 60 gb, and I have about 20 PS2 games I picked up as used, I have yet to encounter any problem with BC.

games I have:

R&C deadlocked, Socom II, Hot Shot 3, Kingdom Heart II, God of War, FFXII, Devil May Cry 3....

Although I have to say, After playing Demo for DMC4, I can't stand to play DMC3 on HDTV, I had to literally move my PS3 to a SD TV to play it on that. It just looks ugly as hell.

Because the 60GB plays all PS2 games.

http://us.playstation.com Visit the official site and there's a backwards compatibility search funtion in the support section which lets you know how games perform. I'm an 80GB owner and quite pleased with it. If you get a 60GB off ebay, make sure you get the original receipt so you can acquire a SquareTrade warranty online. I'd hate for you to get a system and have it break on you without an active warranty.

All you touch and all you see is all your life will ever be.

My 60gb PAL version has been perfect in playing every one of my old PS2 games except for Jimmy Neutron but we just pop it in the PS2 instead. I've still got the PS2 hooked up - it doesn't take up much space and is great for the kids when the PS3 is tied up.

I don't purchase many $60 games. I'll be using my PS3 this year for only MGS4 and Disgaea 3 as new releases, and purchase a few cheap early PS3 games if the price is right. It will almost entirely be used for PS2 games so it's important the BC works. I bought Fire Pro Returns, and will be getting Arcana Hearts, King of Fighters XI and Persona 3 FES soon so I need to make sure the games will work, plus other PS2 games I pick up cheap from Gamestop.

Does anyone know of a compatibility list on the net for PS3 BC like they have for the 360? I couldn't find one through a quick Google search.

 Maybe PS3 doesn't play trash. ;)

JK, I'd be eating crow if it was one of those hidden gen games like Spiderman 2, most likely it won't be.
