Are you looking for nostalgic platforming? Do you miss the good ol' N64 days? Then brace yourself for a unique art style because this game has it!

Have not made it through yet (only a couple of hours in), however so far a lot of the characters (and art style) are from the original Psychonauts (2005). Although it can be played independently, I suspect not playing the original is at least partly why the character development felt lacking. You might want to go back and play the first in the series.

While I do understand that my lack of background in knowing certain characters might be a factor, the storyboard makes it very apparent which characters are ones that have already been established. I could easily tell which characters came from previous games because they were written in full assumption of their existence in the universe.
Where it gets hairy is how the cast grows rapidly and the plot gets some uneven pacing. There are characters I wanted to care about, but the game doesn't invest in them enough for me to have them grow on me like JRPGs. This is probably where I'm spoiled: most good JRPGs really flesh out the entire cast, or at least make that an option (like Scarlet Nexus), so you start to understand each person and how their behavior factors into their backstory. But yea, I can't get into this further or I'll spoil it for you lol
