its not that random .....Just avoid going off road and hitting obstacles and you should be fine. The main thing to get a three star rank is the time you are in the lead. The longer time you are in the lead, the better your chances are of getting it. Despite what they say, falling off or getting hit by shells doesn't deduct or reduce your chance of winning. As long as you play as well as possible and finish 1st for all the races, you should get a three star rank. This includes not using mushroom for shorcuts like shyguy beach, desert levels going threw the sand ect is a no no no ....
That pretty much how I did it took couple tries but it was worth it seeing the beautiful shiny 3star by my name instead of ugly 2star looking thing.

nope it came from Twroo or someone behind they shot it earlier it bounced back it missed me by 1mm ....u somehow always catchup to me its quite annoying i never have any breathing room lucky those banana and green shells kept u off . Its even more dangerous to drive close behind u 1 damn ?item block i get last or a green shell god i hate u.
@Twroo You should add amp316 code and give him your larry lion code he was trying to join the game but didn't have u added

That would be me 
I sent 2 red shells and then saw the blue shell coming over my head, so I sent the third, and picked up a single one which I fired just before I went past.
