I have had some GPs were I thought I drove flawlessly and was guaranteed a 3 star ranking and then the results come up and I get 2 stars. It's one of the most annoying experiences ever. And I'm not ready to commit the hours into playing GPs and hoping Mario Kart randomly gives me a 3 star ranking at the end of a GP rather than 2 star.

its not that random .....Just avoid going off road and hitting obstacles and you should be fine. The main thing to get a three star rank is the time you are in the lead. The longer time you are in the lead, the better your chances are of getting it. Despite what they say, falling off or getting hit by shells doesn't deduct or reduce your chance of winning. As long as you play as well as possible and finish 1st for all the races, you should get a three star rank. This includes not using mushroom for shorcuts like shyguy beach, desert levels going threw the sand ect is a no no no ....
That pretty much how I did it took couple tries but it was worth it seeing the beautiful shiny 3star by my name instead of ugly 2star looking thing.
