Forums - Gaming - Fallout fans-Why do you not like Fallout 3?

Without there being too much bickering, I'm just wondering from people that aren't inviting Fallout 3 into their hearts because of however Bethesda is changing the formula, what is it about this game that is ticking you guys off so much? I personally have spent no more than 5 hours on the original Fallout, so I can't judge personally, but what I'm hearing and seeing thus far looks fantastic. Most people unfamiliar with the series also seem to be hyped for this release.

I ask the fans of the original two games because you would all know best on what is going wrong. All I hear from Bethesda is how true they're keeping it to the originals and I see them taking the series from Interplay a good thing because Interplay was slowly killing the series with their spinoffs.

Just name off everything that is bothering you about this game in comparison to the original two Fallouts.

Wait, let me get my time machine...

Done. They really cocked up the story in the middle, and the Dogmeat this game was a pure bred, not a mutt. What the hell were they thinking?

I think it's just a worry of a change. While change is often good, it is rarely welcome. And it isn't always good.

How about we ask this again in a few months when we've played and see how it plays, story, setting, mood, etc? I'm sure then you may receive valid complaints.

See Ya George.

"He did not die - He passed Away"

At least following a comedians own jokes makes his death easier.

They hate change, different genre.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

I don't feel it'll live up to Fallout 2, because well...

They've changed the game from a best picture Michael Clayton niche type movie to a Pirates 3 summer blockbuster, just to make money with flash.

Shoulda stuck with the original formula, with a series so great, and reintroduced people to the classic fantastic game experience that is already there and tried some Oblivion crap with another IP that wasn't so important.

Yes, they deserve to die, and I hope they burn in hell, lol.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

I'm just asking it now because I see the fans have been flamed lately with all the recent interviews and press attention the game has gotten. Also because as you mentioned, the game is not out yet, and as far as I can tell, Bethesda is keeping it pretty close to the heart of the series. I just want to hear it from the original fans about why they don't like it instead of just saying "Bethesda is killing Fallout" without giving any reasons as to why they think that. I understand change is why, but since were talking about a series that hasn't been visited properly in 10 years, change should be expected. Anyone wondering where a dated looking, isometric RPG is called Fallout 3 should know better at this point.

You wrote out four sentences and gave zero reasons as to why you don't like it. I was kinda hoping for something a little less vague. Maybe like "I don't like the new art direction", "The combat has been changed for the worse", "I really wanted an isometric RPG in 2008", something a little more specific as to what's so bad about this game.

Comparing Michael Clayton to Pirates of the Caribbean doesn't really explain anything, because I prefer the latter film, and think the former is absolutely overrated.

Not staying true to the setting and the story line. The art and graphics are far from representative of the style and mood of the original games.

Wrenching out the turn based gameplay and thereby making it far more twitch based (don't even try with VATs, from previews it's a far cry from a skill based, tactical system)

Killing the dialogue to the point where it's far from anywhere near the depth available in earlier games.

Really, a better question would be, why do you like fallout 3 if your a fan of the fallout series? As a game, Fallout 3 might be good, but it's by no means a fallout game. It would be like asking a fan of halo why he's upset that halo 3 is going to be made as a turn based strategy game in the vein of civilization.

No child-killing, no prostitution, no drug addiction, no trademarks of the series.

Fallout was a seriously f***ed up game... Fallout 2 was even worse. Funny, dark, evil. Bethesda is removing half of what made the series great in the first place and is softballing the Fallout world to appease the mouth breathers.

F*** Bethesda. F*** them in their stupid asses.

Or check out my new webcomic: http://selfcentent.com/

Wouldn't Fallout have just faded away and died without Bethesda? Correct me if I'm wrong, but no one wanted to even touch this series.

I pretty much know nothing about Fallout, but a lot of this talk reminds me of the critics of Chrono Cross. Chrono Cross was very different from Chrono Trigger, and many of the stalwarts hated the change. The thing is, when you take Chrono Cross on its own, it's a great RPG. Hopefully Fallout 3 will be the same way.

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

jman, not quite. Troika, a team largely made up of the original creators of Fallout had placed a bid to make fallout 3 but were unfortunately, outbid by bethesda. Interplay was even making a game in the series under the code name of van buren.

To say the series was dead sounds a bit ignorant as there was a tremendous amount of interest in it from various parties. To relate it to your example with Chrono Cross, it would be as if they had plans to make a real sequel to Chronotrigger, but at the last minute, EA bought the rights and decided to do it their own way.
