Forums - General - What do you think of Africa?

"Every faction in Africa calls themselves by these noble names - Liberation this, Patriotic that, Democratic Republic of something-or-other... I guess they can't own up to what they usually are: a federation of worse oppressors than the last bunch of oppressors. Often, the most barbaric atrocities occur when both combatants proclaim themselves freedom-fighters."

"Back off, man. I'm a scientist."

Your theories are the worst kind of popular tripe, your methods are sloppy, and your conclusions are highly questionable! You are a poor scientist. Especially if you think the moon landing was faked.

A beautiful continent with a rich history of kings and dynasties. A place whose history is ignored by those consumed with pity. A place that only enters someone's mind when they think of their own country.

"Yikes, terrorists in Africa?" "I hope they don't attack us!"

Africa has a great history no matter what part of it you decide to read on. Perhaps the history of trade in Northern Africa? Kingdoms in the West and slave trade? The spread of Islam and Christianity in the East? It doesn't really matter, it's all interesting!

If you take some time to learn about it, you'll gain a true appreciation for it.

When I think of Africa I always think of a lion mauling someone.

Hmm, I think of a documentary that was on TV at some odd hour in the morning.

Where a british reporter and crew stayed with an African tribe for a period of time and lived their lifestyle. I think they were drinking/eating (was very thick and bitty) this cow blood. The rite of passage for the males was killing some kind of wild cat, or crocodile, can't remember which.

Africa is so big its impossible to have a unified perspective for all of it. Compare it to something like North America where everything can neatly be divided into pre-1500 and post-1500 in terms of impact and which groups of people ruled where.

From what I can tell the native cultures in Africa are actually very rich and interesting. I do believe it was European meddling that has caused much of the strife there, but also just the fact that tribal cultures don't mix well with technology and globalization. This is also the issue with the middle east. They live in a modern world but still have a tribal mindset, and with the weapons and transportation and all that we have now it creates horrific scenes of violence, which messes with the minds of those who witness it and creates a never ending cycle of extreme violence.

I was an international affairs student and one of my anthropology prof.s specialized in African tribes. Its pretty interesting stuff really. I also knew a Liberian man who let me try this special drink they made from a root where he came from that only men were allowed to drink to make them very strong. I feel special haha.

What the hell do I want to go to a place like Mombasa? ... I'm sort of scared about going there ... I just see myself in a pot of boiling water with all these natives dancing around me.

That's what Toronto's Mayor Mel Lastman said during IOC's olympic bidding tours for the 2008 Olympics. Interestingly enough, this was not the stupidest thing he did or said while Mayor.
