Benga Benga, Square is actually doing just fine financially. They've been turning a minor profit throughout the last full year, due to the fact that they've been putting out so many ports and remakes on the DS and PSP (both fairly profitable platforms). Still, I definitely agree that they made a serious error when it came to their console strategy. Square poured all their resources into PS3 development, and that's been little short of disastrous for a company that still concentrates heavily on Japan. (Square does roughly 70% of their business in the home islands.)
On topic, I'm not at all convinced that we'll see another Final Fantasy this generation. FF13 looks very likely to be a 2009 release, and the Versus spinoff (which we still know literally nothing about) probably won't come until another year after that, 2010. A new generation of consoles will definitely be launching in 2011, so there's no guarantee we'll see a FF14 before the eighth generation. Unfortunately, this is the cost of leaping too far ahead technologically: games that take forever to develop. (Jusk ask that poor Gran Turismo team, which takes 180 days to render a single car!)
If another Final Fantasy game DOES come this generation, I'm extremely doubtful that it would be PS3-exclusive. There's no financial motive to do so, and a whole lot of reasons to make the game multiplatform. If anything, a PS3/360 release would be a logical step, if Square can't tear itself away from its love of HD to make a Wii version.
