First off, I didn't think the videos size or format was particularly good at showing the effects they were trying to demonstrate; material effects and normal/bump mapping are more subtile details which are lost at such a low resolution of a compressed video. The next thing was that the art assets were not that great, and you'd be surprised how much more impressive an effect can look when it is used by a really good artist. The last thing I can say is I don't believe this (virtually unknown) developer represents the greatest technical minds on the market; I think this engine represents the work of a competent developer, focusing on showing off the technology of the Wii, and getting good performance out of the hardware. |
First of all, there is a hi-rez version of the video.
Second of all, this is just a tech demo for the engine. Polygon count and texturing can be saved for a major game.
Third of all, we don't think they represent the greatest minds. We think they represent people who actually want to push the Wii, which is too rare right now.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs
