Forums - Gaming - Games that are overrated/underrated for console sales

Although Windbane, I totally agree that this isn't a "nail in the coffin" any more than, say, Metal Gear Solid 4 will totally stop all Wii sales. That's just flagrant talk, I agree. Moreover, DQ X hasn't even been announced in any way shape or form for the Wii, so we're really jumping to conclusions there.

Instead, let's just agree that the Dragon Quest franchise is more pivotal to console sales than most people on these forums realize -- regardless of what platform they are on. I bet some people didn't even know they still make DQ games, let alone that they competed (and often bested) FF games for popularity in some major markets. That seem fair?

i have a gamecube but i pre-ordered my Wii before launch before i want to play Zelda on Wii, i want to get the best experience, with motion control, aiming using wii-remote and 16:9 graphics. If Zelda was not a launch title, i probably won't preorder it or even buy at launch.

resistance, vf5, oblivion, motorstorm are top quality games. system sellers to some but not others as for good games: flow, calling all cars, tekken 5:dr, nba 2k7, nhl2k7, mlb 07, virtua tennis, ridge racer 7, formula 1 you did do what i asked for ill agree, but what i want was games that are on people's minds when they buy the system.

Oblivion was a 360 seller not a PS3 seller. Its just a PS3 suppliment for those who got a PS3 but didnt sell their console since it was out for about a year on both the 360 and PC's prior.

Madden and sport games in general are considered cross platform thus arent really sellers. A gamer will not buy a specific console for any specific sport game. They will buy the sport game that is available to their console.

Motorstorm is horrible as reflected by its weak sales and poor player reviews. It was highly overrated and overhyped. It definitly doesnt sell consoles.

I dont know much about the other games but that is a very weak list. The Wii definitly has better games at this point in time but I think the 360 has them both beat with released games but none of them can touch my home PC ;-p

I don't know why you consider God of War to be "overrated". When it first came out, it was new IP, and, at least for me, came out of nowhere. That means people needed added time to learn about it, versus if it had been yet another sequel to a well-known franchise (e.g., one of the zillions of Marios), and results would trickle in. The way you are coming to a determination is not very good for new IP.

No one has mentioned Halo 2? By far, one of the biggest system sellers in the past 10 years. The Xbox, in the US was languishing in sales in the US pretty bad. Then came Halo 2. H2 souly increased sales of the Xbox from an average holiday of 500-550k, to more than 800k, while bringing the PS2 sales to its knees. The Playstation 2's sales were SEVERELY decreased YOY vs. the previoius year(s), and November was the only month that a system had dethroned the Playstation brand during a holiday season in nearly 10 years. That, my friends, is a system seller. As for Playstation, GTA, FF and DQ are all major system sellers. Blue Dragon on the 360 is/was a system seller of recent memory for the 360. Gundam Mousou was as well, but to a much lesser extent in terms of %.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Yeah, Halo2 sold a few, but being bundled with a "limited edition" console also helped it sell systems.

No, FF does NOT come out on top, and never has. DQ is THE premier series in Japan, Final Fantasy is a time waster, waiting for the next DQ game. Look at the drect comparisons 3.77m for an NES game, the ONLY FF that outpaced DQ3, is FF7, and barely at that.

DQ10 COULD be on any of the next gen consoles, but WONT be. It will be on Wii, and it will outsell FF13 2 to 1 in Japan

And next time you want to look non Biased, Dont leave the low sellers off your chart, Like FF 3 and 4, and 1 and 2 when available.

Geez.  You said what I quoted, that it wasn't even close.  You said nothing about Japan only, but I did.

But fine, I figured since I completely proved you wrong that you'd attack the Japan segment.  I have tallied all the last 6 or 7 games before and FF came out on top, but I'm not going to do that again.  Look at this website and you'll at least see that the FF totals are higher than the DQ totals.  Remember, Japan only, because in other regions it "isn't even close" because FF dominates.

I am not biased, I have DQ8 and enjoy it.  I just like to take advantage of what the purpose of the site is.

You can still say that DQ is underrated, but on this forum is keeps getting overrated (this is not the first time I've had to debunk the claim that DQ dominates FF in Japan, let alone worldwide as you implied).

I think a lot of us have similar ideas in our head what franchises sell consoles, and for many of us, those impressions are at least slightly, if not significantly, off. This thread is not about what games are actually good or which aren't: it's about which games tend to be the most important system sellers. In many cases, the "overrated" games here will games that are quite good, but don't sell that many systems anyway.

First, the most important evidence:

http://vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php
http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=GC&reg1=All&cons2=PS2&reg2=All&cons3=XB&reg3=All&weekly=1

What we're going ot do here is look at software sales, how many of a game was sold, and how many of a system were sold around the release of any given title.

Overatted sellers:

1) Metroid Prime

This is the most obvious offender. Remember, please, that I am NOT saying that the games are bad, by any means. They're some of the best ever in my mind -- they just don't sell many consoles. The two Metroid Prime games have sold less than 4 million copies total, and there is no visible blip of any kind on the GC sales chart to indicate that any additional consoles were sold because of the game's release on November 18, 2002.

2) Metal Gear

This one isn't quite so clear as Metroid Prime, but it's fair to say that most of us overestimate how many consoles this game sells. It's last iteration sold a little less than 4 million copies. That's not bad, by any means, but I think a lot of us associate Metal Gear Solid with "premier console seller," which it isn't. The game was outsold by Simpsons: Hit and Run, Spiderman the Movie, among other titles none of us associate with top-notch games.

3) God of War

This one is in the same boat as Metroid Prime: despite being hailed by critics, the two titles in this series have jointly sold around 3.5 million in copies (both games are still selling, but not a lot. It's unlikely the two games will tally more than 4 million total copies in the end). The sequel has barely pushed past the million mark thus far, and has been outsold by games such as Shrek II, Tetris Worlds, 50 cent: Bullet Proof, and Spy Hunter.

Underrated

1) Gran Turismo

We all know this is a big title, I'd just say a lot of us just don't know how big. Let's put it this way: Gran Turismo 3 sold more copies than Metal Gear Solid II, Metal Gear Solid III, God of War I, and God of War II combined. It sells well everywhere, and one can visibly see a significant spike in PS2 sales around the game's launch dates (April 28, 2001 for Japan, July 10th for the US, and September 20th for the EU).

2) Grand Theft Auto

Again, we know it's big. But did you know that Gran Turismo and GTA account for all five of the top five best selling games on the PS2? When you gather up the sales of the three GTA games, those sales are more than these PS2 games:

1) Final Fantasy X, X-II and XII

2) Metal Gear Solid II and III

3) God of War I and II

4) Devil May Cry I, II, and III

Combined. Combined. In short, Gran Turismo and GTA have been in a league of their own over the last 5 years. None of the other available series come close. On any platform. Well, any console platform. Which leads me too...

3) Pokemon

Over the course of my browsings in video game forums, I see a lot of people say things like "Pokemon doesn't count." I have quite seriously seen those exact words uttered (or typed). It's almost as if, because it's outside of their personal interests, they don't think Pokemon should count as a real video game or something. I can relate, as I certainly don't care about Pokemon either. But I also don't care about God of War, so I think it's a little silly to trivialize this behemoth simply because it may not be within my scope of interest. Put simply: Pokemon is the only franchise on any system that has seriously contended with GTA and GT over the last 5 years. Again, the problem with this one isn't that gamers fail to recognize how enormous the popularity is, they just (often) refuse to recognize that popularity as valid. As if, because it's aimed more at 5-10 year olds than 18-25 year olds, it's trivial. My response is: tell that to Sony and the PSP.

There are other franchises to list, but these were the first and most glaring that came to mind. Please feel free to criticize or add your own franchises in here, but don't forget to support your claims with evidence!

Agree with most of that. There are very few people I know that don't have al least one GTA game, a Gran Turismo Game, and have not played Pokemon at sometime in their life. Also, none of my friends own either Metroid, God of War, and I don't ven think anyone I know has MGS either.

Stick, this isn't about which games are the best system sellers, it's about which games are overrated/underrated as system sellers. Halo can sell systems... and everyone knows it can sell systems: thus, it's not underrated (or overrated). I think people's perception of the power of Halo is just about spot on what reality indicates to us.
