Yeah, you might just want to do a system restore if you can't get around it anyway else. At least if you lose the games you downloaded you can put them back on there for no extra cost by redownloading from the store. Losing your save data might suck.
Try creating a new user account, which will get rid of any extra things you have running, and go from there. Can you access the system menus, such as the system information and system settings so that you could potentially reset the firmware?
We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke
It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...." Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Good luck following the instructions on that link.
Edit: only do so when Akuma's tip did not work!

problem with that is, i can't create a new user because when i select it on the xmb it still shows up as a loading animation and won't let me select it.
Yeah, at least you have the option to hard reset, which means it isn't bricked for good. It really sucks that you have to go through this though.
You might call the Sony support people and see if they can help you at all, they have been helpful when I called them. No reason not to if you are going to have to hard factory reset anyways.

Were you using a wireless connection when you updated? If so, how strong was your wireless signal?

i was using wireless, but it's a pretty strong signal, the router is like 5 feet away from the ps3.
But doesn't it do a checksum before applying the update to make sure the download was perfect?
EDIT: My 2 ps3's are fine.
ok, this is weird...
i opened one of my user accounts and now its randomly not showing the videos i downloaded (the new gt5 videos) and i didn't delete them.
everything works fine on this account, so i'm guessing those videos are somehow corrupted. but now i have to figure out a way to delete them...
ok my ps3 is officially going insane, when i tried sorting the videos by import date rather than by title it froze and when i turned it off it wouldn't let me restart it for like 30 seconds.
