Before IV comes out I am looking to nab one on Steam. Which one (III, Vice City, San Andreas) do you think is the most fun for a first timer?

Just wait for IV. Does it really make any sense to buy an old one when the new one is right around the corner? If you have a PSP, get one of it's GTA's. That way, when you do get IV, you'll still have use for it, since it's something you can play when you're not at home.

Yea but I don't have a PSP. And since my roomie plays the PS3 something like 20 hours a day as it is, I figured I might as well get one on Steam. Only like $9

^^ GTA4 won't make the previous GTA games obsolete. It will just make all other games obsolete.

I would suggest buying them all, and make sure that you download the 2D ones for free as well if you haven't played them before.

GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas are easily 3 of the best games ever made, but if you really only want one, I would suggest San Andreas. VC is a bit "cooler" due to the ultra-hip retro '80s vibe, but SA is the best overall due to the many gameplay additions, and less frustrating remote-control missions.

Get GTA 2 thats the best one by far. And it is not that damn long either.

At their core, they're all pretty much the same game. San Andreas has the best gameplay additions of the three, and most agree it has the most interesting main character.

San Andreas gave you the most options and I played it for more hours than the other two (3 and Vice City). I would say they are all good, but they got progressively better with each addition.

Just wait for GTA 4, it will be here in two weeks time. You do not need to of played any of the other GTA games they are all completely different, its not a continuing story.
