Forums - Sony - Is GT5P considered successful? Can it sell 2 million?

Downloads included it can probably get to 2 million.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

It is certainly a sucess for a glorfied demo, possible to hit 2 million.

Whether or not it reaches 2 million is not important in my mind (I think it'll fall just short), what is important that it is a success. Selling 1 million @$40 means $40 million in revenue. It pays off the advertising, production and all that.....plus some money that will offset the development of gt5 (but not completely pay for it). Off chance does anyone know how much the gt5 development costs are?

It should easily hit 2 million at some point this year.

GT5 development costs "are 50 times that of GT1," according to Yammamuchi.

Well, most full games need only sell 500k copies to be a success, and plenty are successful at even less than that. Most people consider the game to be a "demo" (though it's as feature-ladden as many full games), and as a demo it's sold at $40. I'd say selling more than a million easily is pretty successful, and it still has a whole region to launch in. And we can't track the PSN version sales, either, so it'll almost certainly sell over 2 million whether we are aware of it on the charts or not. Plus, 100% of the code goes into the full game, so (as mentioned by others) it's essentially something Sony threw together for nothing. Plus, it's a mere "demo" yet it is actually pushing console sales.

Yeah, I'd call it a pretty damn big success.

So GT5 costs 50 times that of GT1 to develop, but will it be 50 times better and will it sell 50 times more copies?

Ouch, 50X. I don't know how much GT1 cost, but I'll assume approximately 1 million......which would put it @$50M+.....wow much higher than I thought it'd be.

I think 50 million is probably an accurate guess. But, GT1 was an unmitigated success well beyond Sony's imagination, and the industry has changed, so it's rather difficult to say this isn't the way things should be. Frankly, after you make the first game in the series a success you always have to spend much more on its successors to keep it up.

Really, though, even without prologue GT5 is going to reach well over $600 million in revenues on its own, let alone consoles sold along with it. Really, when you include the innevitable DLC, GT5 is bound to be worth more than a billion in revenues all by itself, and I'd say that's worth a $50m investment.

is much likly that gt5p will or can hits 2 millions

Sure it can. Remember it just came out the GT5 may not be released until 2010. GT5P has plenty of time to sell.
