Forums - Sports Discussion - The NFL Thread 2018: The New England Patriots win Super Bowl LIII

Who Will Win Super Bowl LIII?

Saints 5 21.74%

Chiefs 2 8.70%

Rams 3 13.04%

Patriots 9 39.13%

Cowboys 2 8.70%

Chargers 1 4.35%

Eagles 1 4.35%

Colts 0 0%

Total:23

Steelers still have that .004% chance of that tie to sneak into the 6th seed. Honestly they don't deserve to go after their terrible games this season. Ravens have a backup QB, while the Colts and Titans have been a bit more consistent.

I will switch to a Colts pick by 3 btw.

So of course the poll is tied for how to conduct postseason predictions as of the time of this post. As a result, I'm leaving the poll open for one more day. If we're still tied after tomorrow, I'm making an executive decision. Additionally, for those of you who want a playoff, if nobody volunteers to take my (and whoever my potential opponent would be) predictions for a playoff format, I'm choosing just standard predictions.

Also I'm getting this up early as a result. Consider it my very late Christmas present.

Not a ton to say here; very positive week overall. The Saints' and Packers' losses tripped nearly everyone up (because I guess we still have confidence in Green Bay for some reason). Minnesota's choke job also hurt most people, and nearly everyone else got at least one wrong somewhere else. TheGoldenBoy and Chris Hu both posted the top mark of the week at 13-3, which means...

TheGoldenBoy is the VGChartz 2018 NFL Prediction League winner! Congratulations!

TBG was the only member to break 170 wins for this season. Here's how his 171-85 record stacks up against past winners (that I'm aware of).

2012: insomniac17: 177-79

2013: burninmylight: 172-84

2014: MTZehvor: 178-78

2015: Farsala: 166-90

2016: FatedReality: 169-87

2017: burninmylight: 174-82

Speaking of burninmylight, his fourth place finish is, to my knowledge, the best finish of any defending champion (although the league was admittedly much smaller this year). Should a playoff system be implemented, he, cycychris, Level1Death, and TGB would all receive byes through the second round.

Rol's ability to fix MNF games (and my own inability to correctly read how our picks differed) allowed him to claim the #5 seed on tiebreakers. Meanwhile, Chris Hu broke the tie with XD84 for the seventh spot by virtue of his strong week (although he was set to win the tiebreaker anyway). Additionally, everyone but Angelus (who appears to have disappeared) would qualify for the playoffs if we went that route.

Please vote in the poll if you haven't already, and once again, congratulations to TheGoldenBoy! Thanks to everyone who participated this year.

It doesn't really change anything, but I did pick the Colts instead of the Titans before kickoff.

Bringing my PP to 29. And that is with missing the freest week of the season. I wouldn't have won the league anyways, but I think it was satisfactory, if I did predict that week than I would at least have done better than last year. Lots of 2nd place finishes, need more 1st place finishes.

I will take this opportunity to thank MTZehvor for managing the league this year while we live in dire times, and congratulate TheGoldenBoy for stellar predictions.

No problem, it was fun to do.

Just as a minor aside for this case and if we do regular predictions in the future; if anyone makes any change to their predictions at all, no matter how small, could you please repost the entire bracket and bold what was changed? I usually scroll through and look for the bracket when compiling picks, and text posts tend to get passed by.

Damn... I actually won. Not bad for someone who barely watches any games lol.

Thanks MTZehvor for all the work you put in and everyone that competed.

If Dak played the way he did against the Giants, Cowboys have a good chance at going to the super bowl.

I really don't think Dak is going to be how Dallas makes a potential Super Bowl run. Hanging 36 points on the 5-11 Giants is one thing, but going to presumably both New Orleans and Los Angeles/Chicago, and putting up 30+ points is something else entirely. If the Cowboys go deep in the playoffs, it's going to be because their defense continues to operate at an elite level and is able to hold down the best offense in the league.

Here are the bracket predictions from the beginning of the year. Unsurprisingly, I still suck at this. SpokenTruth (wherever he may be) has opened up a large lead on everyone else, thanks to scorin gmultiple  points consistently in divisions that many people struggled with (NFC East, AFC North, AFC West) as well as being one of only three people to predict a division perfectly. Fortunately for everyone else, his Jacksonville-Green Bay Super Bowl pick is already shot, so there's plenty of opportunities to make up lost ground.

Some quick hits:

Despite the AFC East having the most predictable winner, the division was utter chaos after New England. There were only two correct picks at all over the other three spots, the worst mark for any division's #2-#4.

Absolutely nobody saw Baltimore coming. Everyone picked Pittsburgh as the AFC North champ. The only people that got points for that division were the ones that had Cleveland at #3 and Cincy at #4

Ha ha ha, I told you all Jacksonville was going to take a step backwards. Unfortunately, I also told you that Tennessee would be the second seed, so ha ha ha at me. Only two people picked Houston as champ, dongo8 and NobleTeam360. Your faith in Deshaun Watson has been rewarded.

Again, only two people picked the AFC West champ correctly, Farsala and myself. The darkhorse Chargers pick almost worked out for everyone else, but sadly LA lost to Denver at home and missed out on a division championship (and a #1 seed) on the division record tiebreaker. Ouch.

Absolutely nobody got the NFC East champ right. NobleTeam360 was the only one who even had the Cowboys in the playoffs, and that was as a wild card.

The NFC North was the overall worst division for the league by far. Only Spoken Truth managed to get multiple point from the North. Nobody saw Chicago coming...or Green Bay falling as far as they did.

The NFC South was a bit better, as quite a few people had the Saints winning the division. Everybody had Tampa Bay finishing last, which didn't look so great after Week 1 but seems pretty good now. And the Bucs still plan on starting Jameis Winston next year...hoo boy.

And finally, the best division for most, the NFC West. Only one joker (Farsala) didn't have the Rams winning the division. Most people expected the 49ers to finish second, but Jimmy Garoppolo's injury derailed those predictions in a hurry. Ah well.

However, Farsala was the only one to pick the Cards for the #1 draft pick. Feel free to laugh at Chris Hu and dongo8 for picking the Bears here.

AFC and NFC Wild Card teams were generally pretty solid for most people. Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, Minnesota, and Green Bay missing the playoffs entirely hurt a lot of people here, but beyond that nearly everyone managed at least six points (coughs nervously).

Dak was able to beat the giants, a cowboys rival without three pro bowl lineman and Zeke. That is nothing short of amazing.

...beating a 5-11 team with nothing to play for that has the 9th worst defense in the league by one point is hardly "amazing," regardless of who you're missing.
