The only AAA/AA video game I've bought this year was Vanquish(PC).

It's been a pretty cheap year so far for me^^

it baffles me how you can look at gameplay footage from Octopath Traveller and say it looks like a mobile game or that this game isn't a AA game, especially when you have Trails of cold steel 2 in your own AA-list.

I don't understand...That's WHY I'm saying Octopath isn't AA.  You can't say those two games are on the same budget level.

One look at Octopath and one look at Trails of Cold Steel tells you that Trails of Cold Steel has a MUCH bigger budget.

Maybe one look is not enough?

Octopath Traveler is sprite based but it's not a 2D game, it's more like a 3D game painted in 2D sprites. It also takes heavily use of modern effects like Depth of field, dynamic lightning, particle effects, etc.. Probably a lot of work went into tweaking the UE4 to create this unique art style.

Trails of Cold Steel II is basically a Vita port with higher resolution, it looks even mediocre for a PS360 game. Yeah it's fully 3D but that's not really an achievement in 2018(or 2014 when it first released), the models in this game have a really low polygon count, the environment has a very low level of detail and the animations are atrocious.

So far that was only the graphics.

octopath traveler got localised in 6 different languages, Trails of cold Steel only in japanese and english.Square Enix also made an fantastic, almost 4 h long, orchestral soundtrack for OT.

And last but not least, the marketing budget for OT was probably a lot higher than the one for TocS2.

One could argue that neither of those two are AA and that's fair( i would personally count them as AA) but what you're saying is kinda outlandish.

Bayonetta 1 and 2

Kirby Star Allies (AA I guess?)

Octopath Traveler (AA, haters gonna hate)

God of War

Horizon Zero Dawn

Resident Evil 7

Persona 5

Monster Hunter World

Assassin's Creed Origins

Dragonball FighterZ

I guess I will add my plan to buys as well...

Spiderman (PS4)

Red Dead Redemption 2 (PS4)

Assassin's Creed Odyssey (PS4)

Smash Ultimate (Switch)

Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna (Switch)

I also MIGHT get...

Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (Switch)

YsVIII (Switch)

Valkeria Chronicles 4 (Switch)

Wolfenstein 2 (Switch)

Hyrule Warriors (Switch)

My maybe games are Switch by default, as I have way too much to play already so I need the portability for the extras.  Dragon Quest XI might have to wait till next year, and we will see how far off the Switch version is when the time comes.

No, sorry, what you're saying is kind of outlandish.  For one thing, you can't count the marketing budget in determining whether a game is mid-tier/AAA.  Otherwise, every single Pokemon game would have to be considered AAA, which is clearly not the case.

Honestly, it baffles me that I even have to convince someone that Trails of Cold Steel has a higher budget than what looks like an upscaled-to-hd SNES game...That goes without saying.  It's really not that complicated.

Personally, this is looking like a pretty slow year compare to the madness that was 2017. I only bought God of War and the Shadow of the Colossus Remake. As far as planning to buy, my list consists of Octopath and Smash Bros Ultimate basically. Personally, I'm much more interested in what indies have to offer this year.

I make game analyses on youtube:

FFVI: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSO6n8kNCwk
Shadow of the Colossus: https://youtu.be/9kDBFGw6SXQ
Silent Hill 2: https://youtu.be/BwISCik3Njc
BotW: https://youtu.be/4auqRSAWYKU

So far, only SOTC Remake, which failed to engage me.

I have Mega Man 11 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate locked down for preorder.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Wow.  If you think POKEMON is AAA...then the term has no meaning...this is a lost cause...
