Forums - Nintendo Discussion - DigitalFoundry: Captain Toad is Great on Switch... But 3DS Is The Real Surprise

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iq0N-AsZ8Vo

Originally, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker ran at 720p on Wii U. This has been increased to 1080p on Switch when docked. It’s a native 720p in handheld mode.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is essentially identical on Switch compared to Wii U in terms of visuals. User graphics display at 1080p though.

The 3DS version is where things get interesting. Nintendo is displaying the same action on both screens, meaning the action is being rendered twice. There is naturally a downgrade in visuals, affecting texture detail, shader quality, and geometry are reduced.

When playing on Switch and 3DS, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker runs at 60 frames per second. The 3DS version drops that to 30 FPS.

Motion controls, we meet again.

I never actually beat the game. I think I beat the toad side maybe. So half the game. So seeing as I already own it, I have a hard time dropping $50 or $60 on this game. Whatever it is. Maybe when it drops to say $20

Why would I buy it again though? Portability. When I originally got this game, I loved the idea of playing this in bed or on the go in a car, plane, ect. Obviously the on the go aspect was something I knew was not possible, but still thought about bed. But sadly the Wii U gamepad just sucked and had short range. Could hardly leave living room before it cut out.

So it is tempting to have what is essentially a AAA phone game on an actual portable device. As great as playing say Zelda on the go is, there are times when one just wants to play something that is a quick few minute level like this game has. But since I've already played most of it. It will need a sale.

From the looks of it you may be best off with the 3DS version. Seems more fun to play as it's faithful to the original control scheme.
