Jesus christ. Things have become totally unpredictable.

Brazil - Mexico 2-1
Belgium - Japan 3-0

Please win Mexico.

Please let at least one of Mexico or Japan win tomorrow.

So, either Russia or Croatia will be on the semifinals and play the seven matches. Doesn't seem right somehow, after three world cups with only traditional teams making it to the semifinals and the top four.

Was Spain in 2010 really a traditional team though? They hadn't made the last 4 since 1950 before that.

It had been 60 years since Spain had a top 4 finish, but they went into that tournament as the odds-on favourite and were considered the best team in the world. They were called the great underachievers

Spain's lol worthy elimination aside, today's games were painful to watch from a neutral standpoint. Hoping for better games tomorrow:

Brazil 2 - 1 Mexico
Belgium 3 - 1 Japan

Yeah, but that doesn't make them a "traditional" team. Just like Belgium this year despite being among the favourites aren't a traditional World Cup title contender.

I think Germany and Brazil are probably the only teams that are contenders every time (except 2002 for Germany, but they ended up making the final).

Italy surely should be considered a traditional World Cup team too. I know they're not even in the Cup this time, but with the amount of times they've won it or got far in it they have to be considered one of the traditional teams. Argentina and the Netherlands too considering the impact they've had in the tournament for decades and the fact that a lot is always expected of them. France in the last 30 years have been regular favourites too, apart from their implosion in 2010 they've regularly done well.

Besides, with their World Cup win and continued favourites status since, I think it's fair to call Spain a traditional World Cup team now and not be at all surprised if they get to the latter stages, I just don't think that was really true before they won it in 2010 considering their lack of success up until that point.

I guess their national team may not have been a traditional power at that point, but they were a major footballing nation due to their club scene.

All hope was lost two days before the tournament started.

Hierro decided that today was as good a day as any other to dismantle the midfield by sending Iniesta to the bench, stick with Silva (who has been consistently horrible through the tournament) and shoehorn on the right a left midfielder like Asensio, who is only good against teams that leave spaces, in a match against a team that will park the bus.

Unsurprisingly the team struggled to get anywhere close to the russian area during the first half.

In the second half Hierro didn't do anything until Russia made all their subs. When he finally decided to do something he got them right and the team improved a lot, but Spain run out of time before scoring.

Expectable when all your coach's experience is a 8th place in Spain second division with a team that has one of the biggest budgets of the league.

England have a better chance of making the World Cup Finals with the shock loss of Spain in last night's match. Getting past Colombia is England's toughest hurdle but their expected opponents in the next 2 rounds should be easier. France, Uruguay, Brazil, etc in the Final.
