Secret of Evermore had the major problem of not being Secret of Mana, which is what a lot of folks were expecting. Taking it for what it was, it was a fun game with a great sense of humor ("we're all just sprites being controlled by the whims of our controller-touting overlord!") but most folks I know never gave it that chance. Meh, their loss.

I actually never played Secret of Mana, so I came into Secret of Evermore completely unbiased. I still think it's one of the funniest games ever made--especially from Square Enix. I loved how every situation in the game reminded the hero of some bizarre science fiction film. I was only getting into Square at the time of Secret of Evermore's release. Prior to that, I simply hadn't been a big RPG/Adventure RPG gamer. But, towards the end of the SNES's life, I was all about Final Fantasy II (US, actually part IV), Final Fantasy III (VI), Chrono Trigger, Secret of Evermore, Super Mario RPG, and this was also around the time I played Zelda: A Link to the Past.
