The current generation is still way too weak to handle 4k properly. There is no such thing as "being fine" with GPUs, especially not for years. We can't even advance to the next step of imaging techniques because the GPUs aren't able to catch up.

You're right, but if the new mid-range cards start to cost around $1000, how many PC owners will be flocking to buy one? If this craze continues, devs would have to stick with current, optimised for majority of GPUs, engines, instead of moving forward. This could also have an affect on next gen consoles, which would be even more devastating for the progress in graphics quality. In that sense, whatever you have now, might not be as outdated in the near future as might think.
