Forums - Sony - How to fix "Disc Read Error" on the PS2.

Man, this thread is pretty dead considering how widespread and absolutely crippling people are claiming this problem to be.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

People are busy fixing their DRE with the advise that's been provided. Once they are done, they'll come here and thank you. :)

Well I bookmarked this thread. I have played and finished more than 100 games on the PS2 in the last 4 years. It still reads and plays everything. When shit happens I will be prepared.

umm no...this may fix 10% or so of the DRE on a PS2. The other 90% have to be fixed by calibrating the laser...turning 2 screws slowly on the motherboard...one for CD one for DVD...etc...

This has fixed 2 of my PS2's and one of my friend's PS2's. That is 3 out of the 3 that I have tried it on. Man, what are the chances of that? Like 1 out of 1000 right? Obviously I must just be the luckiest guy on earth, right?

Thats prety lucky actually.

I modded well over 20 ps2's for my freinds in my college days as well as repaired(or tried to repair) atleast as many... Most of the PS2's DRE problems come from the fact that not enough voltage goes to the laser to read the disks. Most of the time CD disks don't work first but DVD's still work then later go DVD's as well. In any case, to fix that one must push more voltage to the laser by adjusting the voltage screws on the motherboard...but too much voltae will not work either so its a very delicate process of trun screw 25 degrees...test...turn again...test again...

That was the DRE issue on a PS2...otherwise having a dirty laser can happen to any system out there...which is where that product helps and can be used on PS1, PS2, xbox, 360, any movie DVD player etc...

I have seen my friend do this to his PS2 so I know what you are talking about. He messed with the position of the laser too.

I really haven't seen any research done to give specific numbers on the subject, so I think it is difficult to make any bold percentage claims either way without some kind of hard numbers to back them up.

::shrug:: Well, I had 3 PS2s replaced because of DRE. I would clean my lens, that was not the problem. I'd have to open up my PS2s and adjust the angle the tray would hold the disk to fix the problem. But after a while the problem would return, and eventually the angle adjustment didn't work anymore. I had read that the power was another cause of the problem, but I wasn't going to mess with the power. So thats when I'd replace my PS2s, when the disk adjustment wouldn't work anymore.

Probably because most people have actually tried this before and it hasn't worked... and said people have just bought new ones.

That's how i've been doing it.

I had issues with FFX, but i cleaned the disk using hairspray and it worked.

Here's the real way to fix the disk read error:

forget about it and buy a PS3 80 gig.

What if the Disk Read Error is due to a voltage drift powering the laser?

Hmm... my old PS2 gets occasional DRE on regular DVD discs and won't read blue discs at all. When I called Sony about it, they wanted $75 and 6-8 weeks to fix. :(

I bought a PS2 slim a few days later. ;_;

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.

Get a new one.
