Forums - Gaming - More Resident Evil 5 racism claims

Political correctness has gone from being a cure to being a pandemic disease. Instead of affecting a dissolution of racial stereotypes. The opposite is true now it is actually generating schisms based upon race. Racial consideration is a primary factor in creative interaction. We have effectively supplanted one racism with another racism no less harmful.

The goal should be to treat everyone the same and to make no distinctions. That is the root of racism. The belief that there is a fundamental difference between two groups of people based solely on the color of their skin. Political correctness isn't abolishing this notion it has merely reversed the recognition into what it views as a positive rather then a negative. Instead of treating that group the same as any other you treat them as special, and in need of special consideration. A utterly hollow gesture.

While it may be true that receiving a friendly gesture is preferable to mental or physical abuse. The underlying mindset remains fantastically unaltered. He is different from me so I should treat him differently. This has a horrible long term ramification it abdicates the responsibility of true interaction. Meaning that as long as you behave nice you have no requirement to actually entertain real human relationships. Hell you have no requirement for even feeling empathy towards the other person.

Political correctness is nothing less then racism in another guise. Still creating divides between peoples and individuals. Still cleansing us of moral responsibility for the well being of others. Still curbing human interaction. Instead of not communicating with people, because you feel they are inferior or evil. You instead do not communicate with them out of the fear that you might offend them. The intentions be damned the result is still exactly the same.

We had pure racism, and then we had political correctness, and the next step should be for us to just not give a shit anymore. Which is the correct state of mind. We need to get to the point where anyone thinking in terms of political correctness is looked upon as a huge throwback.

N'Gai Croal is really slipping out the backside of the wave. While he is still thinking of people in racial terms more progressive people no longer even note a distinction or allow it to taint how they live their lives. I applaud developers for not even taking race into consideration. They are the ones not being racists, and if this game is going to offend you its because you yourself are a racist.

Basically I look at statements such as these the same way I look at outdated hardware. Shocked to see it, laughing at how primitive it is, curious as to whether they still make them, and then I finally move on with more important matters.

What about RE2? You shoot a man who's black, and a cop. Both white protagonists do that.

Racist, and encourages cop killing. [rolls eyes]

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

"Why does no one here take N'Gai serious?"

Because he is talking bullshit. Resident Evil games take place in a remote village where all inhabitants suddenly become zombies. It would be racist if they would never play in Africa.

"still white people in general have always been the opressors and have never been opressed by another race."

At least not in the last 150 years. (In this time we have only opressed outselve) Before that europeans have been oppressed by arabs, mongols, turks in this order. Besides Capcom is japanese right, they really have never suppressed africans. (although they did it with Chinese, koreans, phillipines, Englishmen etc.)

Hmm, this is very complicated indeed.

On the one hand, I hate it when people try to look at situations and try to find ways to see it as being racist. Yes, african americans have been through a lot; racism, slavery, lack of freedoms, etc. But they overcame to get those freedoms....very few people are left from that era in today's world. So now this guy has the gall to claim that he feels offended? He has the freedoms now. He doesn't have to suffer like the black people had to do in the past. He never went through the struggle. Doing this is just trying to ask more pity from everybody else, which is a disgusting thing to do. Just move on and stop trying to get people to feel sorry for you and other African Americans.....things are different now in today's world and asking people to do things differently because it might be "racist" when it really is just a matter of "different perspectives" is just foolish.

However, on the other hand, one needs to know the history of Haiti to know that the people there are very sensitive about what happens in RE5. It isn't the white-killing-black that I believe might be hurtful, but it is the overall violence. Haiti went through A LOT of violence....civil wars, violent dictators and coup de etat.....hell, they went through 7 leaders in 6 years before the U.S. tried to colonize the land in the early 1900's (the last leader having his head cut off and his body chucked out the window of the palace in front of a large crowd). And believe me, the U.S. influence didn't help a lot to quell the violence. That maybe why it might be a little wrong to have RE5 in Haiti. It would be like having a game where you have to kill an entire zombies in Darfur or Rwanda during its civil war, or Jewish zombies during Nazi Germany in WWII. Yes they are zombies. But they were human before zombie.

So, in conclusion, I am lost as to how to perceive this. But, hey, what do I care? I hate horror games (gives me the creeps )

Explanation of sig:

I am a Pakistani.....my name is Dan....how hard is that? (Don't ask about the 101...apparantely there are more of me out there....)

All of these "racism! RACISM!!11!!" shouting people need to take a hike and let us enjoy the game (when it is released)

Actually, that's very perceptive, and now I wonder if that's what N'Gai is going on about.  It's not so insensitive because they are black, but because they are Haitian.  Haiti has suffered from so much violent tragedy in even it's recent past, you have to wonder why anyone would visualize MORE violent tragedy happening there or worse, make it fun.  In that context, I have to agree with N'Gai.  It isn't racist, but it sure may be totally insensitive to Haitian people.

I don't think he would have said this stuff if he wasn't actually offended. Besides this is not the first of these stories.
All the arguments are correct, but I personally cannot say whether shouldn't feel offended about something like this.

The argument about "We killed numerous white people as well" may sound totally logical, still white people in general have always been the opressors and have never been opressed by another race.

You need to step away from the PC bong for a while and clear your head. There isn't a race on this planet that hasn't been oppressed at some time or another.

I'm of Norwegian descent and I suppose I could get in a huff about how you often see Norwegians, or perceived Norwegians, as brutal, blood-thirsty vikings in media. While we're on the subject, did you know that some vikings were also slave-traders? They enslaved many a European back in the old days.

Personally, N'Gai is nuts if he thinks this stuff. I've always kind of liked the guy, and still do, but comments like this feed and breed racism, rather than combat true racism.

Haiti is a goldmine for a game like the Resident Evil series. There is probably no place on earth more associated with "zombies", so it makes perfect sense for a RE game to take place there.

"I feel like I could take on the whole Empire myself."

In a recent interview (I'm trying to find the link) they say the game is set in Africa not Haiti.

Spoiler : It is not Haiti Voodoo/Zombi. They choose Africa as the place where the virus had originated.

That statement shows ignorance in so many levels. Egypt anyone?

Ok here's the link : http://blog.capcom.com/archives/1116

"So for the setting we thought :
How about using the place where humankind was born ?"

"[...] but we thought we would use Africa which is now called the birthplace of humanity, as the model.
That's how we came to use a place in Africa as the setting for Bio 5. "

Very interesting interview with Jun Takeuchi.
