@Words of Wisdom. You are probably right that Eu needs microsoft (They could use apple though and apple would like that) but I am pretty sure that MS need EU too.

You're right. Financial difficulty was probably the wrong phrase to use. |

I hope they do this. It's about time a government did something more than give a company a slap on the wrist for breaking the law. Maybe with action like this, it'll no longer be profitable to ignore the laws and companies will start obeying them.
u know if they could i believe they would but just to save face they won't ban high profile companies like Msoft for fear of coming off hypocritical or protectionist with their "unfair business practices" mantra. When a business or individual make a little more money than the barons that really run their union.

This isn't the US we are talking about here. The EU decision-makers don't listen to anyone: not their own people; not member state governments; not corporations. This can be good or bad, and in this case it is for the better.
I wonder how long education software would be Win32 based if Win32 was effectively banned in schools...

I dont think they would ban windows, just stop MS selling directly to schools.

That won't happen, not unless the EU wants to fund replacement OS's. Nearly every school and libarie uses windows and how would they pay for new operating systems, not too mention the massive disruption.

Actually UK Goverment depertmanets are currently switching over to Linux based OS and a recent Government review of Schools recommend switching to Apple.
