Those 2 models have been discontinued for close to 6 months and since then have been selling for a huge premium over the 40Gb on amazon and other sites where people resell their console which means the demand for models with BC is higher than for models with no BC right now...

I think this article should read, "Why does 360 SUCK so bad in Japan?" PS3 is doing just fine and will pick up steam as soon as the summer starts off. 360 on the other hand is damn near dead in Japan....

Good enough graphics are also bullshit. There may be people who do not care and at the moment the partygames, motion controls, the big N titles and the price outcompete any graphical advantages of the competition. ONE factor will not decide a generation that is true. And I never said this.

I do not think that the PS3 will overtake the Wii in Japan once price comes down and the big sony titles are out. I think world-wide it has a (small) chance after all Sony didn't yet release ONE (maybe ratchet) of their really big franchise exclusives (MGS4, GT, FF, K2?, LBP?. God of War, Colossus ...) while Nintendo already had Zelda, Galaxy, Smash, Metroid ... (or all but Kart) Its all about the games after all. But this is a different discussion.

Its all about the games. PSP was getting spanked by DS for most of its life in Japan. In fact, the sales were laughable throughout its first few years. Now its kicking the Wii and DS's butt. Although it will be head to head with the DS from now on, all it took was good games. The only thing that hurts this for PS3 is that Monster Hunter 3 switched to the Wii. But I don't see it selling even half as much as it did on PSP because the Japanese prefer handhelds. PS3 will make a comeback in Japan. And while the PS2 was chosen by the Japanese and was the winner last gen, this gen the Wii is in a different market than the PS2 was. In fact, the Wii is basically competing with the PS2. So don't count out the PS3 yet, FF13 will change the tide of this console war. In both America and Japan.

Wait, they removed BC to lower the price. Japan now has the lowest PS3 prices at close to $310 street price. Now Sony is supposed to put BC back in after it's shut down that production line? It not like they can just flip a switch, they would have to reorder all the parts and retool the production line again. That stuff costs money.

People claiming PS3 is dead in Japan are forgetting it hit numbers this low and lower last year before bouncing back, it'll jump again with big releases, holidays, price cuts and new models.

The lack of JRPGs is a big reason why it's not doing better, more of them will hit this year and next.

I'm sure MGS 4 and WKS will create bumps when they hit, FF XIII next year is definitely the biggest system seller for the PS3 in Japan, if it's cheaper and slimmer by then it'll help too. The strange thing is almost all the big PS3 exclusives for the year are western focused. Sony is focusing more on the west than the homeland now, weird.
