You realize that you just suggested MS committed SEC fraud for nearly a decade?

What about MS losing ~$2 billion per year on Xbox?

I think Azzanation is also forgetting about the profit the PS3 brought to them by pushing Blu-ray as the dominant format over HD DVD.  Sony brings in royalties (I believe) for Blu-ray sales.

They indeed do, but it was Panasonic who made blu ray.

Sony is just one of the members of the blu ray association (Panasonic/Pioneer/Samsung/LG electronics etc) and their are another 40 + contributors who all get a slice of the pie. Only if Sony makes the blu ray discs you can talk about a cut of 0.25 dollar for each blu ray they receive but in general they should not get more than 0.08 Dollar in royalties for every blu ray disc sold. Or after 1 billion movies sold they get 80 million.   It is not very impressive if you know that they probably make more in a month for ps plus renewals/new subscriptions.  Sony apparently also not makes the blu ray discs in China for xbox but another company does in Mexico (considering the big market in USA it makes sense).

It didn't off-set the loses PS3 suffered because of it.

I'm still wondering if the switch really is increasing Nintendo's userbase and sales or is it just replacing the 3DS?

I recall seeing some "Nintendo Switch is my first Nintendo platform" threads not long ago.

I know a friend never cared to buy the Nintendo consoles, and didn't bought the HH but was interested in Pokemon... Switch will make him buy both.

One big difference is blu-ray royalties where not mixed in with the gaming division , where in Ms's case the android patent royalties where .

Here's something I noticed while browsing through the latest financial reports. All figures provided are for the six months from April 1 - September 30, 2017 (Q1/Q2 FY3/2018).

Sony: https://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/library/fr/17q2_sony.pdf
Nintendo: https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2017/171030e.pdf

PSN has a higher revenue than Nintendo Co. Ltd.

Nintendo Co. Ltd. revenue 374.041 billion JPY [from page 5]
Sony Game and Network Services Network revenue (PSN revenue) : 418.288 billion JPY [from page F-9]

In terms of operating income, here is Sony Game and Network Services (PlayStation) with a higher figure than that of Nintendo.

Nintendo Co. Ltd. Operating Income: 39.961 billion JPY [from page 5]
Sony Game and Network Services Operating Income: 72.483 billion JPY [from page F-7]

Erratum: a previous version of this post erroneously noted that figures for Nintendo Co. Ltd. were taken from page 4 of the financial report. The post has since been updated to reflect the correct page number.

What matter's most is net income for the entire company. Net income is the money that is left over after taxes, cost of goods, etc.

Nintendo's net income for 2017 was 102.6 billion yen. Sony's was 73.2 billion yen.

Wikipedia says it was made by Sony, Philips and Pioneer.

And don't forget that the fees for a Blu-Ray player - $9.50. So, Sony does get a cut of every Xbox One sold.

For 2 more months However, it sounds like Sony is also planning on making changes to MAU, so I expect them to attempt to have microtransactions/GaaS more prominently in the future.

Yep, and I reckon I'm going to be pissing off a lot of Sony fans when that happens.

You're looking at the last fiscal year. Sony's net income for Q2 was 130.9 billion yen. Nintendo's net income for Q1 + Q2 is 51.5 billion yen. Sony's Q1 profit was 80.9 billion yen.

So, for the current fiscal year, Sony is at 211.8 billion yen vs. Nintendo's 51.5 billion yen.

Want to add anything else?
