Uh... the discount is mandated by Gamestop, not Sony.

No company will slash prices unless they can get the hardware for cheaper. Watch this space, this is one of those deal which xbox struck in the past with certain retailers to encourage them to reduce the price to help shift consoles. I expect more retailers to follow before black Friday hits (my opinion).
