How have they shot themselves in the foot?., Their concurrent players list ended up blowing FN's out of the water and the amount it's sold on PC alone is staggeringly high. Couple that with an Xbox release and eventual PS4 release will see the numbers growing.

All of the pie?, not sure what pie you're on about, unless it's just the PS4 pie, which doesn't dwarf PC, let alone PC and Xbox combined. Even then the game will be landing on two more platforms to boot.

Lol. PUBG did not shoot themselves in the foot by not releasing on PS4. They are massively successful right now and are concentrating on a smooth PC and Xbox release. As soon as they've done that, then they can bring it to PS4, where it will also be a massive hit. Fortnite can't hold a candle to PUBG. Maybe some other battle royale game will be able to, but it isn't Fortnite.

I enjoy the game quite a lot and even though it's free to play its growth rate is really impressive considering it's only been out for 1 month.

Fortnite BR (after 1 month) - 0.8 mill concurrent players peak and 10 mill unique players
PUBG (after 7 months) - 2.2 mill concurrent players peak and 17.2 mill unique players

PUBG's growth is carried by Asia with half its worldwide player base in China and Korea alone.

Its growth in the West has stagnated. Whether that has anything to do with Fortnite BR's growth, I can't say for sure.

The Chinese government has announced that they're looking into banning Battle Royale games like PUBG (link).

I wonder how successful games without Battle Royal modes would be with Battle Royal modes? CoD? Battlefront? Bloodborne?

That would be a massive blow to PUGB.
