Forums - Nintendo - Is the Switch going to get two waves of 1st party support?

Will there be another 1st party wave?

Yes 32 82.05%

No 1 2.56%

Maybe 5 12.82%

I have no opinion on this subject 1 2.56%

Now that they don't have to support two systems there'll be no waves, only a consistent stream of games!

Not sure exactly why you aren't including 2nd party games, but even then, I'm not sure how you are classifying games as 1st party because a lot seem to be missing..

Spirit Tracks (DS), Four Swords Adventure (GCN), MK8 (WiiU), Metroid Fusion (GBA), Mario vs Donkey Kong..

But with Nintendo switching focus away from the 3DS, the droughts on the Switch will be less, so it should be more continual support, rather than in waves

[3DS] Winter Playtimes [Wii U]

Not sure why Star Fox 1 should get included and not Donkey Kong Country, considering both were made by British developers and not by Nintendo.

I think this emphasizes just how good Nintendo's support for the Wii was. Look how huge the Wii list is compared to the other lists. Sure the others are all missing multiple games (Fire Emblem, Mario Maker?), but so is the Wii list.

Given Nintendo's public statements, their internal re-organisation and the fact 3DS support is obviously being wound down, I'd hope we don't see 'waves' of support on Switch - the plan seems to be to support the system with a consistent stream of software.

Right now that's be fairly straight-forward for Nintendo, but they had advantages this year in that projects which began life on Wii U (Zelda, Odyssey) became cross-platform or Switch exclusive, deluxe versions of Wii U titles launched (Pokken, Mario Kart), and they re-used an existing engine/assets to get something out quickly (Splatoon 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 2). I'm not being critical here - this is the kind of strategy Nintendo need going forward if they want their systems to do well. The end result is that Switch has an excellent first year line-up and consumers have responded to that, which means Nintendo and other companies can invest more heavily in future software for the system knowing there's a solid base growing.

In terms of future support, that does raise some question marks - especially given we don't know much about what Nintendo have planned for the system. That being said, it's one year to the day since Switch was revealed, and look at how well this first year has gone, even without a lengthy build-up in 'hype' etc. We know that Nintendo have Metroid Prime 4, Pokemon RPG, Yoshi, Kirby and Fire Emblem in development - with the latter 3 certainly being 2018 titles. Given the resources Nintendo have, though, you'd hope there's even more coming. It'd be easy for them to bring out deluxe versions of Smash and Mario Maker - versions that combine Wii U/3DS content and add some new content - and a franchise like Animal Crossing is due a new release, so 2018 could also easily have a consistent stream of support.

Anyway the main point is there are grounds to be optimistic that Nintendo will actually achieve a level of consistent software support with Switch that allows the system to flourish - but that we'll also just going to have to sit back and see what happens before we know for sure.

Every since the release of the SNES in 1991 Nintendo follows a certain software strategy. That strategy is release most of the big 1st party games within the 1st two years. Here is what I am talking about (1st party is Nintendo devloped or a company that Nintendo 100% owns like Retro)

Your basically asking if Nintendo will support the Switch with big titles, in year 3-4 of its lifetime?

Thats such a sad question..... it should be a obvious yes.

Doesnt every console maker out there do this?

You forgot Golden Sun 1 and 2 and Minish Cap on GBA.And I think there is also many titles missing in the other consoles.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

As others have said, it shouldn't be waves, more like a constant stream of support.

You are leaving a lot of titles out, not sure why?

GBA
F-Zero MV (2001)
Mario Kart Super Circuit (2001)
Wario Land 4 (2001)
Wario Ware  Mega Microgame$(2003)

Wait?!?! Was that really all they released for 1st party games on the GBA that wasn't ports? How the hell did this thing sell 80 million units?

Maybe because you forgot the most important games of the Nintendo handheld consoles, aka Pokémon games

By this logic and the hybrid nature of the device wouldn't there be four waves of 1st party titles planned for the Switch?

Not really. The DS 1st party wave was 2004-2006. Wii was 2006-2008.  Now imagine if Nintendo made a sorta DS-Wii hybrid. Then the support will be like 2004-2008.

Nintendo supports a system in two ways.  1st party support and 2nd party support. What I am talking about is that the 1st party support mostly happens in the 1st two years. The 2nd party support happens after those two years. (Mostly.)
So Nintendo systems do get 4 or more years of support but that is because it is 1st party + 2nd Party support. What I am talking about is only 1st party support which again mostly happens in the first two years. However now it is possible that wave extends to be four years instead of two. Effectively doubling the amount of software.  I have not even delve on what 2nd parties can do just yet.

Yeah it is definitly pokemon. Nintendo really didn't carry that system on their own.

When I put first party games I meant internally developed or companies that Nintendo 100% owns. Retro Studios is allowed but not Intelligent Systems. So games like Pokemon and Fire Emblem are not on there because they are not internally developed.  Also I knew that I did not get all the titles. I was rushing a bit and didn't double check. Also Mario vs Donkey is 1st party? I don't believe it!

The reason I am putting so much emphasis on this is because the 1st party are who make the biggest hits. There are exceptions but usually the 1st party studios are the ones who make most of the big hitters. Also some games like Minish Cap are made by Capcom not Nintendo.

Also when I mean a second wave I do not mean we will get one set of games and then nothing and then another set og games. We will probably see see a lot of the big 1st party titles in the 1st two years. Then instead of it tapping out like every other system there will be a new wave of support. So we are talking about 4 or so years of prime 1st party support. Unlike other systems who tended to have their biggest console sellers in the 1st two years. (Mostly)

Anyway I will try to add missing titles and make more additions when I come home. I was impatient when I posted this last night.
