The narrative that these games cost so much money and arnt profitable needs to die. People online had me believing that there is no money being made in this industry, that is untill I got into stocks. I encourage everyone to go out and look at these publishers stocks over the last 5 years. Acti-blizzard, Ubisoft, ea, and take-two all the big publishers traded in America have had huge growth.

In the last 5 yrs price per share
Activision- 10$ to 61
Ea- 12$ to 116$
Take 2- 10 to 104
Ubisoft 1.5 to 15.5

So tell me again how this industry is doing? These publishers arnt loosing money they just want everything to make money like call of duty, destiny, FIFA, overwatch ect. Not every game is going to give u that. It's just greed.

Big 3rd party publishers (unlike first party) have no incentive to publish unprofitable games. They won't finance the developmet of a game if they can't make a proper return on the imvestment.

All the companies you've listed have all grown because they can count on cash-cow franchise that can generate them billions of income thus make them able to sustain AAA development costs: Activision has COD, EA has FIFA, Take2 has GTA, Ubisoft has Assasin's Creed.

All big publishers who couldn't rely on a cash-cow like those have either closed business or have shift their focus (see THQ, se Square Enix mobile games, Konami pachinkos)

All those cash cows u listed have been around for more than 5 years. And all but gta where more popular then so why did they all grow 5-10 times? WOW was massive and COD was huge 5 years ago not nearly as much now yet huge growth. Why?

This is EA guys. They're the ones who ruin the studios and shut them down, while Activision milks the fuck out of them until they are dry, then somehow fill them up and milk them again.

In all seriousness, sad to see this happen, but it was a long time coming after the DS3 "flop".

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

Hopefully she leaves EA.

She most likely will. She loves making these SP story driven games. I remember her mentioning that she joined the studio so she could write the star wars story she ever dreamed of. That is very likely to not happen now. We'll see.

My dream is that Crystal dynamics gets her back and they work on a new Legacy of Kain. But, i'm rapidly losing faith in western 3rd party studios ability to make anything but a crappy lootcrate filled POS games.

What these companies want is impossible and the market will implode at this pace. Multiplayer games are capped by active players. It is simply impossible to keep them all populated. But i guess they need some duds and some more studio closures before realising that.

Funny that japanese development is now looking more hopeful.

Heck this even makes Bethesda look good because at least, they still believe in SP games. EA is a lost case. I regret getting FIFA18 now, even if i got it heavily discounted/basically for free.

His initial game wasn't Star Wars though. It was something else. Respawn pitched Star Wars but ea was hesitant at first. By late 2015 ea came around and they started on Star Wars scrapping whatever they where working on first. The Star Wars team is supposedly completely separate from the titanfall one.

Go to the last 3 or 4 minutes. That ign vid was October 2016 and he says approx. 1 year before that.

Well, late 2015 to late 2018 is still 3 years, so there is hope, Titanfall 2 was made in 2 and half years afterall.

Titanfall 2 was. But the team had just put out the first and I'm sure they where very focused on what they wanted to do. Sequels can always be made quicker. They went into a different genre and essentially a new ip for Star Wars and a newly formed team. Late 2019 is a reasonable expectation. Maybe earliest for all 3:

early 2019 respawn

late 2019 battlefront 3

late 2020 viserals(well whoever took over).

I doubt Square will let Crystal work on something besides Tomb Raider, the new IP they've been working on for a few years, and the Marvel game they announced earlier this year anytime soon.

Oh yeah... forgot about their marvel deal. :/

Western development is getting so depressing. This is exactly what many of us predicted would happen by keeping the push for more powerful machines faster. It comes to the point where all that is seen as viable are multiplayer shooter games. The market just won't last with that.

It's pretty amazing how EA has had the Star Wars license for almost 4 and a half years now and all they've managed to push out is a bunch of expansions for The Old Republic, a Battlefront game (soon to be 2) and absolutely nothing else, and it's not exactly like a big Star Wars game which isn't Battlefront is soon to be released. If I were Disney I wouldn't extend the deal once it's up and instead I'd go the Marvel route.

At this point, only Sony, Nintendo and a few others will still make sp focused games, the rest will be busy with all these online loot box-filled open world bullshit games

I do think that if the game was coming along good and seamed like a good game they wouldn't have pivoted after 2 1/2 years of development. Things were probably mass effect andromeda bad.

They've been on a roll as of late, returning to the glory days of not so long ago at all, when they were the undisputed black hole of the industry. The Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Shadow Of War bullshit, and now this, in short order. Good show EA. As for Visceral, the only game they made that I had more than a fleeting experience with was The Godfather 2, which while not exactly a critical darling, I really liked, and have fond memories of. Hope thier staff hit the ground running and are working again asap.

Isn't Shadow of War Warner Brothers?
