The gender confusion was something invented by NoA in the SMB2 manual for...actually I don't know why they made that up. I guess someone there has a weird sense of humor.
EDIT: I remember now, it had something to do with Nintendo being afraid of the backlash involved in beating a girl up (you do slap the bitch in the face with her own eggs) so they had that freaky stint in the SMB2 manual that made it out like birdowas a guy pretending to be a girl. I guess they were more afraid of the repercussions of female violence than trannies.
