Forums - Gaming - Opinion on future of poor selling quality games

So games like Nioh, Persona 5, Titanfall 2 etc all sold relatively poorly, some didnt even make their money back, but the kicker is that a lot of these games are better than the yearly/high profile games. Do you think devs can tell when a game is recieved very well even if it didnt sell very well and do you think that mass buyer appreciation is enough to motivate them to make a sequal even if it may not be as profitable as say a COD clone?

Koei Tecmo increased their net income forecast for FY2017 H1 from 3.1 billion yen to 4.9 billion yen. Fire Emblem Warriors sold well, and Ni-Oh continued to sell well despite being released in the previous fiscal year.

Here you have a list for your reading pleasure. Much of the budgets for the games is marketing.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_expensive_video_games_to_develop

Holy Honolulu ba........loofarsan, i just read through that list and those development costs are cheap as shit. Even something like Destiny and GTAV didnt cost more than 140 mil to develop, that completely proves i was way off on dev cost, im so happy to be so wrong.

Most of the data on development cost is guesstimates. You will find a lot of different sources that claim to have inside info.

The internet reception is an easy way to gauge interest or dissatisfaction in a game, so developers are definitely aware if the game was received well. Companies make games to make money. Of course I don't want great series to die out due to poor sales, but there is not much companies can do about it. If they continue the series and it continues to underpreform in terms of sales, it would be better for them to put resources in another game that could potentially turn into a profit.

That said, I do like seeing companies take a risk and continue to deliver what the fans want. Metroid Prime is a good example of this, and hopefully, the series can be brought back to life
