I recommend Dethklok to get you pumped, and Gorillaz when you want to calm down. Apparently I'm a sucker for animated bands that really only exist in their videos/tv show.

Considering the fact that I'm really sure no one else here listens to anything remotely similar to me, I don't have much to suggest. But you know, this is a great opportunity for me to put in a plug for last.fm! Good place to get music recommendations.

Hahaha, fucker.
You know what's sad? When you list The Clash, Bowie, Simon & Garfunkel, and early REM in the same post and don't get a single fucking mention of "yeah, that's good stuff" or "nice recommendations". Instead, you read through 10 more posts of bullshit (and yeah, I've listened to most of these bands).
At least you made me laugh, WoW. The great thing is that Rick Astley's music will outlive 3/4 of the artists listed in this thread. And frankly, it deserves to do so. It may be an internet phenomenon but at least that short little bastard figured out how to catch the public attention during the coked up 80s. Something most of these "indie" bands would only dream of doing.
/end rant for people liking shit music

i hate when people do this shit
MY TASTE IN MUSIC>YOURS.
for example, i can't stand the beatles but i respect them, just because everyone thinks they're christ on a cracker that doesn't mean I HAVE to like them.
i don't like any of the bands you listed, but i like stuff other people enjoy like CCR and other "good artists", so, what if people like music different from you? it's not shitty just because you don't like it.
on a side note, those are some pretty generic reccomendations.

Gonna have to agree with BCNR on this one....music is one of the most objective things out there. You can't easily define good and bad music for everyone because everyone is different. Music is all about how you interpret it, and not everyone is going to interpret, and therefore enjoy, the same music the same way.
Calling someone's music taste bad is just silly anyway, because there is no way you are going to win the argument, they like it because they like it, same goes for you.
So don't call my cartoon bands shitty! >:O

Nothing like injecting the thread with a nice condescending dose of subjectivity. Or contradictions. '10 more posts of shit', yet I mentioned the Clash in mine. Who apparently you also recommend. Your thread whines that other people don't praise your superior music recommendations, then goes on to call our own music tastes ''shit''. Nice hypocrisy.

Well, ain't that the beauty of music?
I hate derivative shit. There are plenty of bands I could list that do brilliant things with various music (which makes me wonder why you hate every band I listed previously, could they be more varied?), but bands that take shit from other musicians and sound the fucking same suck.
Which is what 3/4 of this thread consists of...
It's cool to like whatever music you enjoy. That's great. Just like I hate a Michael Bay movie, I hate derivative artists. I love plenty of cheese music but I don't think it's anything spectacular. The OP asked for great music and I gave him some... I didn't go for the White Album but I went for some mainstream (and not so appreciated nowadays) shit that is some of the best music ever produced by anyone's standards.
If you don't like that, let's play a game. It's called: Hide and Go Fuck Yourself.
That should sufficiently provide ammunition for you to blast me again.

Yup, The Police, The Beatles, and early Bob Dylan sure are derivative artists. Damn Dylan for just copying other musicians and never innovating!!!
Not to mention Styles of Beyond, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Damian Marley and System of a Down. Don't really know anybody else who sounds much like them.
