Forums - Gaming - Franchise destruction

Well, it should be pretty obvious what this thread of yours is about.

What franchises do you think have been destroyed the most? Any of your favorites? Any that have the potential of being destroyed in the future? Why was the franchise destroyed? What was wrong with the game(s) that destroyed it? Can it ever be restored?

Obviously Sonic is the most obvious example for this thread, so I'm not even sure we should talk about it.

For me, two of my favorite series are being destroyed.

1. SimCity - already destroyed. SimCity Societies was a mess of a game, that got rid of everything that made SimCity great. It got rid of zoning, power, piping, infrastucture...basically, it's more simple that the original SimCity made 20 years ago, and it just doesn't that last long. Awful. It could be revived though, if they made an awesome (and not too simple OR too complex) SimCity 5....

2. The Sims - actually, not destroyed yet, but there's heavy potential. For one, I don't count the non PC games, they just generally suck in every way. Anyway, EA is becoming very greedy. The whole idea of stuff packs is another way to steal more money...it might not be so bad if they were actually good, but they offer so little content. For the price of one "Stuff pack" that gives your sims a few more objects and clothes, you could buy an amazing full game like The Wind Waker or something. Also, a few of the TS2 expansions were very lousy. (University, Pets, and FreeTime...espesically Pets, worst expansion to anything ever!

Anyway, that's not all though. The Sims 3, which is still a year away, is looking to destroy a lot of the foundations of The Sims. Simultaneous aging, no more motives, and you can't drown your sim in the pool anymore!

Not to mention that the sims themselves are very, very strange looking. The fanbase is very upset over the changes and overall I actually might not buy TS3, which is quite a thing considering I have bought every The Sims 1 and The Sims 2 expansion.

So...post!

Top 3 favorite games: Super Mario Galaxy, The Sims 2 (PC), The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

Around the Network

Donkey Kong

I am going to be honest. After the wind waker I have lost all interest in the zelda series. I tried to get into the twiglight princess but I felt like the whole time i was forcing myself to like it. I got up to the sand temple, beat it and said to hell with it. My loss I guess because out of all of my friends who have played the TP said they love it and dont know what the hell is wrong with me.

Star Fox
Donkey Kong

Dino Crisis

I love the first two of the series, but the three one was a piece of $#!@ that killed the franchise.

My Mains in Brawl

Around the Network

Earthbound, Nintendo buried it :(

Nah, your friends are the chumps. TP is probaby the worst Zelda game I've played. Sure it had visuals, but it was so god damn lackluster and disappointing.

The only people I can imagine likely TP are those who played it as their first 3D Zelda game.

Wind Waker was VERY refreshing imo. I absolutely loved it.

By life end:

  • Wii- 100 million+
  • Xbox360- 35~40 million
  • PS3- 30 million
  • PSP- 30~32 million ------------- FAILURE
  • NDS- 85~90 million (Skeptical)  - FAILURE
  • NDS- 100 million+ (Optimistic) -- Success!

TP was only disappoiting if you DIDN'T want it to smash OoT to pieces. Which doesn't really matter because LttP does that already.

I don't really see how "the fanbase" can be upset about changes in The Sims 3 if they haven't actually tried it. Fanbitching indeed.

Donkey Kong was never 'destroyed.' It fell into disrepair after RARE was gone and Nintendo has made no effort to ressurect it beyond experiments and the likes.

Sonic was clearly never "destroyed" either. Say what you will about the 3D games but the handheld entries are still entertaining.

While I wasn't really a big fan of either franchise, I'd say Crash and Spyro are pretty obvious candidates for the "destroyed franchises" argument. Ever since they stopped being relevant to Sony they've been wandering down a trail of mediocrity. Both franchises have attempted to reinvent themselves and both reinventions were met with a collective 'meh.'

Also it may be a bit extreme at the moment to say this franchise is on the verge of "destruction" but I can't see anything else for the future of Rayman if he doesn't get out of minigameland soon.

Parasite Eve, Chrono Trigger. Square made amazing games, fucked up on the sequels and then forgot about the frachises.

HOLD UP! My dear friend, if you're saying Chrono Cross was a fucked up game, then you're crazy! Well that's your opinion, but Chrono Cross is one of my favourite games of all time, and to me, is one of Square's best effort ever! But I'll agree with you that they just left it to die =( I'm waiting for a Chrono release on the PS3... here's me being hopeful =D

Spyro got pretty crap after the future release...
