Forums - Gaming - GH/ Rock Band Skills Translate to the real thing?

I play the drums but haven't played Rockband so I can't comment on that ...

My brother is a guitar teacher and his claim is that he has never had as many really good guitar students as he has since guitar hero was released. Part of this is the increased dexterity in your fingers that guitar hero provides, and the (very) basic understanding of notes and frets that guitar hero teaches ... Truth be told, the main reason is probably that the motivated guitar hero players who complete the game on uber-hard with 5 stars (including all the bonus tracks) are already far more motivated than the typical kid who saw a band at a concert and decided to learn the guitar.

I think it's more so that the guys with naturally dexterious fingers and a knack for guitar playing only realize this through playing GH.  They then choose to take lessons after the fact.

From my experience, GH has done little to actually improve dexterity in the hands, but has let people with a natural talent for playing really shine.

I'm better then all my friends at GH simply because I play a real guitar for at least an hour a day.  However, I've seen guys in BB etc. who own my ass at GH, and who, upon questioning, have never picked up an instrument in their lives!

I dunno how well it would help with drumming, seeing as how I've been a percussionist since the 5th grade. As for guitar, nope, I still suck.

As stated above, the guitar doesn't translate to the real life instrument at all. The rockband/GH guiter, when played on hard and expert, does help quite a bit. I've played acoustic on and off for a few years and mostly fingerpick the guitar. One of the challenges for the early learner is disconnecting each finger from the hand so chords can be formed quickly and accurately. I would suspect that if someone were to play to a point of getting good with hard/expert and then pickup up the real guitar via lessons, they would spend much less time at the beginning trying to get their fingers to do what they want -- especially the ring and pinky fingers... Just my .02. YMMV.

I hate trolls.

Systems I currently own:  360, PS3, Wii, DS Lite (2)
Systems I've owned: PS2, PS1, Dreamcast, Saturn, 3DO, Genesis, Gamecube, N64, SNES, NES, GBA, GB, C64, Amiga, Atari 2600 and 5200, Sega Game Gear, Vectrex, Intellivision, Pong.  Yes, Pong.

i've seen the other way around too. I have a friend who's an elite master guitar hero guy and he wanted to learn the guitar and to this day he is teh suck

I've been learning drums for real and I don't think that you will learn a whole lot from Rock Band. I think you can learn more in an hour from a good teacher than you will in Rock Band. That's not to say you will learn nothing, but there is a lot of technique involved in drumming.

FishyJoe - is this from playing Rock Band, or not?

Because in my case, when you get into Hard and Expert modes on Rock Band, your learning how to play 16th notes on the High Hat, while keeping a good beat with the bass pedal, and snare. Definately something that can help in real life. Before playing Rock Band, I could never do the bass pedal reliabily on alternating notes, while keeping a steady 4th Note rhytmn on the high hat, and 2nd notes on the snare. Now I can do a standard beat as such, throwing in bass pedal at will, keeping perfect time.

Of course a paid-for drum teacher will let you learn more, but it's not like learning from a teacher like that is nearly as fun as winding your way through And Justice For All on Hard.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

The main issue is that you can do many of the things in Rock Band with bad technique. But if you use that bad technique in real life it could give you carpal tunnel syndrome.

Like I said, it's not that you learn nothing in RB. It's just you can learn a ton of stuff from a good teacher in a single lesson. Maybe I'm crazy, but I can spend hours with just a practice pad, some sheet music and a metronome. Just learning to do the basic rudiments with good speed, dynamics and timing is harder than anything in RB.

RB is fun and challenging. Just don't expect to learn basic drumming technique from it.

i'm somewhat intrested in RB because of the drums. I'm learning guitar in real life and thus the guitar part of RB/GH is meh. But considering a real set of drums is huge and can easily cost over 1000 USD, I figure Rock Band is a pretty good value, considering that its only 170 for the set.

I am a bit disappointed that the Drums don't translate 100%, but then again, i'm expecting too much from a Videogame. I still might get it, just because I like rhythm games. Iono. i hope it is fun ::shrugs shoulders::

guitar kinda just gets the fingers movin. i just started learning (after gh2) and it doesnt translate except for two things. ur fingers move have to spread in unnatural ways(not the same as guitar but it helps) and u get some rhythm.

my pillars of gaming: kh, naughty dog, insomniac, ssb, gow, ff

i officially boycott boycotts.  crap.

lol how could you play guitar if you cant move your fingers... hehehe but you can also move your intire body! join into your music, or else make your viewers roll, and i usually did that thing a couple of times i also play drums sad to say i quit cuz i got a very heavy arms slaming on the snare and its not good!...
