Honestly I have no idea why they went this route. Does implementing these features in the console itself really effect power/battery enough to warrant this inconvenience?

If the original Xbox, or even the DS could do it, there's no excuse for the Switch.

Give Nintendo some credit. This kind of online system wouldn't have been possible in 2006 because smartphones weren't as widespread. This is at least 2010 technology.
