This is the kind of news that i like to hear, this will get me buying retail again if they can keep these prices standard. And its nice to see someone mention the phasing out of DVDs. It is possible if the market is there and it could be headed that way.

To illustrate that one can look for instance at the Amazon price of the DVD and BD releases of the highest-grossing movies of the year and compare its prices on Blu-ray, special-edition DVD and single-disc DVD.
Wal-Mart has also started offering new BDs of theatrical films at $19.96 their first week on shelves. “There's a lot of aggressive discounting going on,” said Tom Adams, president of Adams Media Research. “We expect to see more of that.” “There's something about that $20 market in business that doesn't change, despite 3% inflation in the last decade,” Adams added. “DVD sales at mass market exploded after falling below that $20 barrier. That seems to be the magic price point.” According to a Home Media Magazine survey of pricing at Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart and Amazon, the average shelf price of a new Blu-ray Disc of a theatrical film has dropped nearly $2 from the first half of 2009 to the second. And from the third quarter to the fourth quarter, the price has dropped nearly $3, based on pre-release pricing from the stores' Web sites. “Premium prices were going to shrink,” Adams said. “But we didn't expect to see prices under $20 this year.” Adams projects 9 million Blu-ray ready homes at the end of this year, up from 3 million at the end of last year. He said the format still has less than 10% market penetration, after discounting those PS3 gamers uninterested in buying movies. Once the number of homes hits the 25 million to 50 million range, Adams said, studios should be able to safely phase out DVD completely. “[Blu-ray is] going to be adopted, in our view,” Adams said. “It's the next player you buy. It will be under $100 for the holidays this year, and under $100 permanently starting next year. The adoption curve is healthy. It gives the studio a lot of options.” |

from Blu-ray.com ...........
During a Blu-ray-related forum held in Taipei (Taiwan), a BDA executive revealed that sales volumes of BD movie discs in the US, Europe and Japan in January-September 2009 increased 183%, 200% and 180% respectively from the same period in 2008. Global demand is expected to further increase as average BD player price drops from the current $193 to the $77 forecast for 2012.
Blank recordable media, in turn, are expected to drop from $5 to $1.50. Pricing for BD pickup heads and chipsets, and hence for optical drives for PC, is also expected to drop steeply, thanks to the growing demand for BD players and movie discs, according to Taiwan manufacturers.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY." --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

'Star Trek' tops video charts

"Star Trek"
Consumers beamed up "Star Trek" in droves the week ending Nov. 22, enough to make the summer boxoffice hit the top home-video seller and renter its first week in stores.
"Star Trek," from Paramount Home Entertainment, easily topped both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart and Home Media Magazine's rental chart for the week. The film sold an estimated 5.7 million discs its first week out, according to Home Media Magazine market research -- a figure that includes all of North America as well as the rental market.
First-week Blu-ray Disc sales are pegged at 1.1 million.
Walt Disney's "Up," the No. 1 seller the previous week, slipped to No. 2. Warner's "My Sister's Keeper," a Nick Cassavetes-helmed drama that earned $49.2 million at the boxoffice, debuted at No. 3, while Universal Studios' "Bruno," with $60 million in domestic theatrical earnings, bowed at No. 4.
Excitement about the theatrical opening of "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" sent the original "Twilight," released to the home video market last March, back up to No. 5 on the sales chart.
On Home Media Magazine's rental chart, Sony Picture's "The Ugly Truth," the previous week's top renter, slipped to No. 2, with 40% as much rental action as "Star Trek." "Bruno" debuted at No. 3, with 37% as much rental activity as "Star Trek," while "Up" and "My Sister's Keeper" finished at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively
On the Nielsen VideoScan Blu-ray Disc sales chart, "Star Trek" was the easy victor -- not surprising, considering that nearly 38% of total first-week sales were of the Blu-ray version.
