Forums - Gaming - Nintendo dismisses idea of entering resurgent PC market

Nintendo has no interest in entering the PC market. It's a message that came through loud and clear during the company's latest shareholder Q&A in Tokyo.

When asked about the "incredible growth" shown by the PC games market in recent months and years, driven in part by the emergence of eSports, and whether Nintendo would be looking to capitalize on that, company president Tatsumi Kimishima issued a clear response.

The Nintendo boss explained that right now, he believes the console maker should be concentrating on building out its own "integrated hardware-software" business.

In short, that means the Japanese giant remains fully-focused on delivering first-party experiences on the Switch and 3DS, and shepherding players towards those devices through smartphone efforts like Super Mario Run -- which amassed over 150 million downloads.

"We are aware that many consumers play PC games. However, we believe that the integrated hardware-software business is the best way for us to provide the surprises and new gameplay experiences that we want to achieve," said Kimishima.

"On the other hand, we offered three applications for smart devices during the previous fiscal year, and, though the content and consumers playing the applications were different, each one was received extremely favorably."

So then, it looks like Nintendo doesn't have any immediate plans in place to enter the PC market. But a few years ago, some would've said the same about the Mario maker popping up on mobile.

I have no interest in Nintendo entering the PC market. So I guess we all win.

I'm not surprised, though I guess it would be "re-entering" instead of entering, as there have been Nintendo IPs released on PC before.

Good!

Smartphone + PC + Switch is the best combo!

Pocky Lover Boy!

Resurgent PC gaming is misleading. The resurgence is mostly driven by F2P games in China or South Korea.

Nintendo is anti-consumer for not releasing their exclusive games on PC.

While F2P games and MMO's make up a large part of PC gaming revenue, and yes, much of that comes from China and South Korea, AAA games like Fallout 4, Just Cause, DOOM, GTA, The Witcher, Dark Souls, Overwatch have all performed very well on PC. There is a huge market for paid games and AAA titles on PC as well. Not just f2p and MMOs.

PlayerUknown's Battlegrounds, Counter Strike Global Offensive, Rainbow Six : Siege, Battlefield/Battlefront, The Witcher, Dark Souls, DOOM, Fallout/TES.

Hell, Triple A development just gets more and more PC centric. Maybe because new consoles are so much like PCs.

yeah that's what they said about entering the smartphone business and look at them now.

Nintendo really needs to make a deal with that rainapp for example, market it as in bringing all sorts of games from your PC to your Switch and even if it's just streaming it still a very cool idea.

That and we've been seeing more and more PC version gameplay for AAA games rather than "PS4 gameplay" with PC settings beiing shown alone until release. We've already had SWBF II and Destiny II PC versions being shown off so far.

It still amazes me how PuB made 4 million in 3 months time.
