Probably was going to be in the ND but this was mentioned by a few rumours to be coming for the platform.

I'm not going to say no to games and it'll probably make a lot of people happy but that's such a disappointing return for numbered Final Fantasy on Nintendo consoles.

True but I think most people would be aware of the situation as the main game itself was a title designed ground up for other hardware long before we knew what Switch was unlike DQXI which Horii controls and decided a Switch version was going to happen early on in development, SE clearly want to establish a presence on the platform especially after OT's success.

Given the other games they could announce - the Kingdom Hearts HD collections specifically - this seems like a rather tone-deaf decision. Especially when you consider they have yet to show a screenshot of the actual big release they say they have coming, DQXI. Context won't matter, this will be received by the general audience about as well as a custard pie to the face. So probably best the announcement just kinda dropped in the background with no fanfare.

Oh, I definitely understand the rationale behind doing this rather than the actual FFXV since the mobile game would be infinitely cheaper, faster and easier to put on the Switch. It's just that getting the pocket edition instead of the real version is like expecting Wolverine and getting D-Man instead.

Yeah, I would have been significantly more annoyed if I had found out about this on the direct instead of as a late night, almost throwaway announcement. So at least there's one positive about the direct being delayed.
It's becoming increasingly clear that this direct will fall victim to leaks/inevitable announcements once the delay happened. Apparently Bandai Namco just announced three japanese switch games today, which would've clearly been announced at the jp direct if it wasn't postponed.
With companies like Square, Capcom, and Bandai still going ahead with their reveals, the Laura Kate Dale rumor (which says the direct was postponed because of a specific game in the direct) looks to be true. I think it's a game with some element of apocalypse or natural disaster, which wouldn't sit too well with Japanese people if revealed today (heck, it probably wouldn't sit too well even a week later)
Bet with Intrinsic:
The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

I did wonder if Nintendo were going to reboot, remake or launch a sequel to Disaster: Day of Crisis, and that it was scheduled for this Direct - hence the delay.
Nintendo delayed Advance Wars' release in Japan and Europe due to the September 11 attacks; the game eventually only launched in Japan in a double-pack with the sequel in 2004. I don't think we'll see that severe a reaction here, though.
