Forums - Gaming - Stephen King hits out at anti-videogame bill

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=186264

Stephen King has hit out against a proposed bill that will restrict the sales of videogames across Massachusetts in a similar manner to porn.

Should the bill go through, a seventeen-year-old will legally be able to watch Hostel in the state, but not buy Grand Theft Auto IV.

Speaking in an article for Entertainment Weekly, King stated he was ambivalent about videogames, but objected to the idea of the bill.

"If there's violence to be had, the kids are gonna find a way to get it, just as they'll find a way to get all-day shooters like No Country for Old Men from cable if they want," King said.

"Parents need to have the guts to forbid material they find objectionable... and then explain why it's being forbidden."

"They also need to monitor their children's lives in the pop culture - which means a lot more than seeing what games they're renting down the street."

He added, "Could Massachusetts legislators find better ways to watch out for the kiddies? Man, I sure hope so, because there's a lot more to America's culture of violence than Resident Evil 4."

hahahahaha.....great i love when people with a voice actually use it for us and not against

I think this is grounds to forgive King for the mediocre last few books of the Dark Tower series.

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

Wow lot of threads from you =p.

And good job Stephen King ^^'';

@ Garcian- they were indeed quite mediocre.

Stephen King often speaks out against bill's that restrict peoples freedom, so this is nothing new from the author. It's seems it's more about the principle than the actual subject in question to him.

 Well, hey, several of his novels (IT, Stand By Me, and Carrie come to mind) involve kids/teenagers in very "adult" situations. If they went after kids buying violent video games, they'd probably go after authors like him next.
