Forums - General - Italy and Argentinas 2006 and 78,86 world cup titles were flukes

You know I completely agree with you about the 06 and 78 world cups. I watched the Italy-Australia game and in my mind the Aussies outplayed the Italians, just look at the time of possession in that game and ignore the shot count (the majority of the italian shots were from very long distances so they were easy for the keeper to handle). The Aussies put so much pressure and their defense was impressive, to say the least I can't believe that game was resolved by a bloody penalty kick. As for the Final, France had a much more difficult route knocking out three tough competitors in Spain, Brazil, and Portugal and played better in the final then Italy, no question in my mind that if they abandoned the Penalty shoot out solution and continued playing until one team score, France would have won.

As for the 78 cup, I had heard about that controversy only recently and was intrigued, though Argentina needed four goals (not six as you mentioned). It's intersting to note that Brazil finished third place without having lost a single match. So the Brazilians were robbed. I think the Peruvian team that lost 6-0 was fairly susceptible to crowd violence if they had put forth a stronger effort, I suppose that's the advantage of home field.

Materazzi was ejected early in the second half against Australia: that's what created the gap in time possession. Even with 40 minutes of "power play" Australia was NEVER dangerous, just looking at the time possession in football is meaningless.

Italy won the world cup (its 4th, btw) with the most impressive defense in history. 2 Games allowed in the whole tournament - an incredible owngoal by Zaccardo and a penalty - with its best players in poor conditions (Totti was coming from a major injury), and with a horrible environment.

No team defeated Germany in Dortmund before, we did. that semifinal's victory against Germany was EPIC and drained much energy both mentally and phisically.

Italy won as a team, despite everything.

Heart and balls.

Usually I like Italy and its people... but their football players piss me off big time... there is just no way not to hate those bastards... I don´t mind losing to a good team in a fair match but that hardly ever happens with Italy...

Man ur exaggerating. Maybe Italy were lucky in the last world cup against the aussies, but they made up for it against Germany, even France(though if Zidane didn't head butt, their might've been a differnt outcome)... though i hate Italy, that is the truth

In 1978 Holland were the better team definitely, still what's this about bribing?? Argentina played well, and won... that's football. They were also home, were home support is important! I dont hear u talking about the 66 world cup were an England's second goal definitely didnt cross the line... did i accuse it of a bribe??

In 1986, Maradona was immense and lead Argentina to the final, and were the better team (though i support Germany who lost) but i cant deny Maradona was a legend, and still is, and luck or no luck, both maradona and Argentine deserved it... really they Argentine would've won woth hands or without them, his second goal was brilliant really

im talking about arghentina cheated to beat peru.

also the england goal vs germany DID go in.

And u saw it with ur own eyes??:P It didnt, but again that's football right? We lost in the end
Also Argentine beat Peru 6-0 on home soil... hard to believe?:S i dont get what ur up to..

yes argentina beat peru on their home soil, but member peru was a Tough team back then. dont you find it funny that argentina had to win by more than 4 goals to win and they won? i mean italy couldnt even beat usa at the 1990 world cup ad they were on home soil.

btw i watched the game. not live but on this site that used to show classic matches

All of you seem to forget tahtin that game against Australia the referee expell Materazzi without a valid reason, so theitalians played most of the game with 10 men.

Also the best game of that world cup was the Italian victory over Germany, the home team undefeted on that stadium in official matches.

And Zidanne always was a very good player but with a very very short fuse, remember France 98, he also got expell.

I'm not trying to take away anything but from an Unbiased fan of football (whose Chilean squad never qualified), Italy did not look deserving of the title. Their defense carried them through their only two real matches (against Germany and France) and their offense looked pathetic. The Aussies displayed wonderful ball control against a squad that focused on defense and you can bet with a man down thats what they were playing. The heart the socceroos showed was evident and you just didn't see that emotion from the drama-diving italians. Even the U.S. looked good when matched up with the Italians despite playing 9 men to 10.

BTW what's with this "we" BS.... are you on the roster? Heart and Balls? I did not see heart from that squad (except for Gatuso). That victory against Germany wasn't all that spectacular, it was a great match but certainly not a great victory.
