It's not that Americans don't like hockey. It's that they don't care about it. Especially when it's on a cable channel nobody watches. The strike didn't help either, that was the nail in the coffin. Greedy bastards deserve what they get.
The NHL should have begged to get back on ESPN. Instead they went with VS because of money. Short sighted thinking greedy bastards.
Here are my reasons.
1. Refs are a bunch of jokes.
2. Shootout is an absolute joke in determining winners. They might as well do a homerun derby or foulshot to determine an overtime winner.
3. grossly overlooking the steriod use in NHL, they just won't test the player the way they should. But hey, instead of masking agent found, you can always call it "hair growth drugs" and people will buy it, right?
4. Lockout that accomplished absolutely nothing.

Then why the hell is baseball what it is today givin that they had even more strikes?
The lockout gave smaller market teams a chance at the playoffs because of the salary cap.
And why should have the NHL paid ESPN? It's not like they gave equal air-time for the NHL like they did for the NBA.

Yeah, maybe that's why you have two Russians who scored the most points in the league, another Russian who might win the Vezina, and a Swede who is "dead-locked" for the Norris Trophy.
There are exceptions, but I think I'm on pretty safe ground that the popularity of a sport among the people is heavily dependent on their ability to play it in their back yards. Someone mentioned Maine. Minnesota likes hockey just fine. But Georgia? I've never been, but I bet it's not so hot. (Or is that too hot?)
Canadian ponds freeze. Minnesotan ponds freeze. Carolinian ponds don't, North and South.

Well there are some reason kids and people do not like hockey that is. One is most places do not have little league hockey programs and second some high schools do not have hockey teams. those are big things and also if you live in west usa all they care about it football and basketball.
I have no idea. I'm Canadian... I guess that's in the blood.
Though, I really have no idea. It's fast, they get smashed into the windows (sorry if that's not the correct term) and iono just the ambiance when you go see it is awesome.
Iono it's just like the term fun is different for everyone I guess... *Shrugs*
