Vice City

GTA3 after that it was more of the same but slightly better.

GTAIII. It's one of the few gaming moments where I had my head on my keyboard laughing hysterically at the game multiple times. PetsOvernight.com, the DJs, the great commercials... It was all hilarious.

4. The rest of them (haven't played the top-down ones and the Stories games were merely okay)

While I really liked Vice City and GTA3 a lot (never got into San Andreas, don't know why,) I'm going to have to go with GTA2 (for PC). I loved how the game was actually non-linear, in that you could choose which gangs you wanted to work for, and have evolving, changing relationships with gangs. All of your choices would have an effect on the each of the gang's opinion of you. "Respect is Everything" was the slogan. In the newer ones, it's a scripted series of missions that forces you to work for certain gangs, and I preferred the old approach.

San Andreas for me I liked the music, story, and cities better. CJ bi**h !

I didnt like the transition from modern gangster (gta3) to modern gangsta (SA). Vice City was good also but GTA3 has my vote as the best.

I only really got into the GTA games with GTA3 but although I found it fun, it wasn't untill Vice City that i really began to love the game. San Andreas was fantastic but i love the style of humour in VC plus the general feel of the game. I love Vice City!

I absolutely love Vice City the best. The atmosphere, music, characters....just in general feel of the game felt so right.

GTAIII would come in a close second. the only reason its in second is because it didn't have the sweet 80's setting. I also really liked how the main character (Fido) was silent.

I pre-ordered San Andreas, and while the game was very good, it just didn't have the pizzaz of the last two. I didn't like how this was about gangstas instead of mafia type gangs.

I guess it would have to be the original GTA, since that's the only one I have ever played. It was awesome, I have the PC version. I still remember using the flamethrower on all those chanting orange guys.
