Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Japan Goes Switch Crazy; Supply Starved Consumers Line Up For Lottery Chance To Buy A Switch.

I still don't get where the idea that the Switch isn't popular in Europe comes from! In Switzerland you stll won't find one in Stores anywhere, the biggest gaming online store has the earliest delivery date in August... and its not only the console itself, same goes for the joycons, pro controller and even the hardcase from Nintendo themselves. same thing in Germany, Media Markt (one of the biggest electronics markets there) hasn't had them available online since launch.

Sure it might not be as crazy popular on the same level as in the US or Japan, but it is in no way unpopular over here i think even the wii could be found in stores quicker after launch at this point.

You can check stock, and the EU is the only region it's becoming consistently available in: the UK, Italy, France, Germany, and Spain, in that order. Those are also the most populous nations in Europe; you can keep track of that here: https://www.nowinstock.net/uk/videogaming/consoles/nintendoswitch/

In the US and JPN, it still sells out almost immediately (exlcuding overpriced bundles), which seems to indicate that supply still has a ways to go in catching up with demand.

All of those, besides one SKU sold by Nintendo themselves either say 'out of stock' or 'preorder', unless I'm missing something here that is not exactly the sign of healthy supply. And this is for UK, arguably EUs weakest maket for Nintendo. While the Switch might not sell out within hours like US and Japan, this shows that they indeed sell through their allocations before the next shipment arrives. It just takes a little bit longer.

Disagree on that. The Slavic countries should be the weakest market.

Do we really need a topic each time Nintendo creates artificial " shortages" to create a artificial hype?

Its not selling faster as the ps4 and sony could make enough system after launch, soo can Nintendo.

Is this joke post!?

Well that's dumb. I'd much rather just pay the extra 10k for a scalper console than line up for hours and most likely end up with nothing anyway...

Well infos saying that around 10k higher price is just for preowned Switch.

We are three months out and stores are still only getting small allocations, look at the size of the store in OPs pictures, it was allocated 37 units, anything stocked in such low numbers after launch will sell out.

It was only a short while ago that people were queueing in Japan for the chance to be picked from a lottery to buy a Playstation vr, and that things been out a he'll of a lot longer, are you trying to say that the psvr is super popular due to it selling out instantly too?

3 months after launch Switch is still selling better on week basis in same time period than 3DS, Wii U, PS4 and Vita despite its still very supply constrained. You could find everywhere few week after launch in Japan 3DS, Wii U, PS4 and Vita, that isnt case for Switch depsite for same time period Switch managed to sell better than Wii U, PS4 and Vita (in few weeks it will beat even 3DS for same time period). So no, that wasn't case with any previous non-MS console.

This list maybe you will gave you more clear picture, no one console-handheld from list wasnt so supply constrained 3 monts after launch like Switch.

Wiiu was a flop, PS4 launched in Japan months after it had launched everywhere else worldwide, in February with no games aimed at the Japanese market, vita also launched with little of interest for the Japanese market, 3DS launch was atrocious worldwide and it was only after a round of updates, the release of a bunch of games and a priced drop that saved it.

Pointing out that the switch solder better than these systems is neither a shock nor news, the fact it's behind the 3ds in that list is clearly down to a lack of stock and would likely be around the same or perhaps slightly higher if stock issues weren't as bad.

But you're essentially it's nothing particularly special to be ahead of the ps4/vita/wiiu given that all of them had seriously weak launches in Japan anyway.

The fact is, the ops pictures mean nothing,if there was 37 people lined up or 10 million the store is still only selling 37 consoles.

Point is that you are wrong when you say that was case for any non-MS console, because it's clear that isn't true, that wasn't case for 3DS, Wii U, PS4 and Vita.

OPs pictures means there are huge demand for Switch 3 months after launch and Nintendo cant keep up still with that demand, again that wasn't case for3DS, Wii U, PS4 and Vita.

Fair enough. I should have specified that I was talking about the big european markets. UK is one of, if not the biggest European market, but they don't take to Nintendo particularily well. So when you take the size of the overall market into account it probably is their weakest.

It's a handheld. Japan loves handheld.

I suppose Nintendo won't have enough supply for holiday season.

Maybe just "Nintendo Handheld"

PSP did very well there too.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

UK isnt a weak market compared to the rest of european countries. It's like you say, small compared to it's competitors and in relation to the population but it is still one of the best selling countries in EU.

It has a lot of potential to grow a lot though so I guess in that regard it could be seen as a weak market.

I'm wrong to say there were long queues for those consoles?

I beg to differ, considering I was fucking *IN* said queues.

Google image search for : "PS4 japan queues", "vita japan queues", "WiiU Japan queues", "3ds japan queues", and you'll find plenty of photos taken of the queues, then search for "xbox one japan queues", and you'll be treated to these:

To date this was the biggest queue anyone photographed of the xbox one launch in Japan:

And you can pretty much go to any major electronics store, on any day of the week, any time of the year and find that many people waiting outside for the doors to open, every morning, from people wanting to pick something up before work, too.

Pretty much a mirror of what happened when the 360 and original xbox launched too, the biggest and most active launch event for xbox one was in downtown tokyo where attendees were given free food/drink/shirts/etc for standing around for the midnight launch, and, as evidenced from the various twitter feeds of people who attended it, a lot of them were there for the free food/drink after leaving nearby nightclubs too.

The joys of reality, I guess, and having actually lived here way too long.

As for your "huge demand and nintendo can't keep up with that demand" bit, there very well may be huge demand, but lining up outside of a store for a chance to buy one of 37 units is neither helpfull in guaging it, nor is it indicative with nintendo keeping up with demand, if they can only muster 37 units for such a large, city center store, then clearly they are having *MAJOR* internal issues with unit production.

You do realise we are talking here about long queues 3 months after launch, not about launch or shortly after launch queues!? Evre console have queues at launch or shortly after launch, but rarely some consoles have long queues few months after launch.

Nintendo itself said they undermiasted demand for Switch and they working to increase production, hopefully they will have much more stocks for Splatoon2 launch.
