Using the ARMS warm-up, I was testing how well I could curve my punches with standard contols vs. motion, and there was no noticeable difference, well atleast nothing that made motion contols significantly better anyway, more on that later. First I tried the whole curve the first punch still even after immediately throwing the second as this is the supposed advantage that makes motion controls superior. However, I couldn't definitively tell if I was still able to curve the first punch or not (damn Helix clones and motion control's inability to have the character stand still). That's how insignificant it would be even if it does work like that. So yeah, motion controls don't have any advantages, only their inherent disadvantages, thus are inferior to non-motion. That's not to say they don't still work plenty well enough... except for my next point maybe.
While doing all this testing, I discovered something that might make standard controls clearly favorable to motion, being the ability to curve punches skyward. You do this simply by holding down on the control stick. This is huge as it should greatly help deal with Ribbon Girl and jump-then-grab spammers, and in general just makes way for even moar tactics. Very very bad on Nintendo's part for never mentioning this, but I digress. Now shouldn't motion controls be able to do this too? Well try as I might, I couldn't figure out how. Twisting my wrist forwards and backwards didn't work, jump n dash buttons no good, even tried the SL/SR buttons to no avail. If anyone figures it out, be sure to post about it!
EDIT: Just realized the best arm to test controlling both arms at once with is the Dragon arm, I had been using the Toaster. Went back to try it and yes you can indeed control them separately with motion controls, whereas standard controls curve both at once. So there is an advantage to motion, but I don't feel it's that big of one. Sending both arms out at once generally isn't ideal, and even with motion controls I focus on making sure the arm with the better chance of hitting hits since the other arms purpose is generally just to get them to move where I want.
