Forums - Gaming - OMG!!!! ps3 can now upscale DVD movies ,ps1 and ps2 games upto full 1080p!!

There's lots of image processing techniques that can be used to sharpen upscaled images, it's not really that new.

In reference to how well the PS3 is selling in the UK check out this site: http://www.gamesradar.com/gb/ps3/game/news/article.jsp?sectionId=1006&articleId=20070518164543812084&releaseId=20060314132311609002

The site has news/features on all consoles so it's an unbiased site aswell.

The only problem with citing Amazon is that it isn't representative of the market. larry is very kind to remind many people of that when pointing to 360 games that are in the bestsellers list for Amazon Japan.

Though, I have no doubt some extra PS3s got sold in the UK after SGD. The claim of over 100k was what threw me off.

Anyway, back on topic, this is without a doubt the BEST firmware upgrade Sony has ever offered. Right in time for the Warhawk beta, as well. Good stuff.

Your kidding right? A question mark in a sentence denotes that it is not a statement of fact but rather a question as to what the actual facts are fail to see how me asking if the PS3 dvd upscalability to 1080p could be achieved on a $100 dollar dvd player is an act of ignorance expecially considering that a quick search on amazon brings up the Toshiba SD 7990 a $108 dollar dvd player that displays 1080p resolution have also seen 1080i set ups for less than that. As to the emulation by the Cell and the RSX gpu I understand that it can do this for a few games and that its number is growing but as of right now sites like this one

exist for those games that are not. Also to my knowledge the PS3 does not at the moment use 65nm chips if that is what you are suggesting I believe they have begun manufacturing them but do not plan on putting them into the machine until late 2008 or early 2009.

This is the best update so far for the PS3 and it also adds remote play if you have a PSP, but does the Xbox already upscale old Xbox games and movies? Cause if it does I never even knew...

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

Yes, actually, it does. The benefit of having software emulation. And the 360 has a hardware scaler (ANA or something?).

Edit: Post 300! Wo0t!

won't old games look like shit when you upscale them? Isn't this why nintendo improves on the N64 games before putting them on the VC?

Will someone please answer this or give me a link to some pics that are upscaled? I really know nothing at all when it comes to upscaling or 1080p (i?) and all this jazz. Some people around here thought this should have been done when the PS3 launched so this has to be good news for ps3 fans, yes?

Since the 360 does it already you could ask one of them what upscaled DVDs look like vs regular ones, or wait for PS3 owners to try it out tomorrow.

It's good news, but it still points to the fact that there's little reason to buy a PS3 if you don't have an HDTV, which is still most of American households. When I get an HDTV I'll take things like this into concideration when potentially buying a PS3, but without one there's no reason to.

The 360 upscales DVDs ok, but its really all up to the image processor or software method used. ANA is a decent chip, but nowhere near something like a faroudja for DVD upscaling. That chip is found in many upscaling DVD players, in particular the ones made by denon. Still, there are even better alternatives, such as a Crystalio upscaller, but thats at a wallet busting price of $4000. Since the PS3 does not have a hardware scaler, I'm assuming its using software to up rez. In this case, the quality could be superb, but it could be crap. With proper software upscalling, you can get results equivelent to a high end scaler, and the PS3 certainly has the power to pull off those results. But it really comes down to how much time/effort sony put into this. That being said, the upscaling of games is probably just software emulation, but at a higher resolution. Its basically like any PC emulator you've ever used, and should be decent quality. This is the same way the 360 offers Xbox games at 1080p, and its definetly noticable. BTW, is larry just being kept around for laughs?

What the heck Larry? You are spouting a lot of stuff you can't back up. Look there is nothing wrong with liking one system more then others and showing your support for that system, but don't make up sales figures in an attempt to make the other system look worse and yours better. Defend with facts. Really, you shouldn't need to have the best selling system to justify your purchase. Why do you feel the need for everyone around you to agree that it's the best way to go?

Anyway, on the original subject: awesome. Some games though actually don't look good when upscaled. I don't like the jagged edges that appear. Still, very cool for DVDs. Just another reason I wish I could afford a PS3!

And Eab, Larry is the one falsifying figures in order to bash other consoles, all anyone is asking for from him is to present facts and justify his claims.

agreed! Im a Proud PSWII60 OWNER. GO! HALO 3! GO! SSB BRAWL GO! Um Whats on PS3 oh thats right GO! Uncharted!( this game does look really good though)
