core duo is basically dual celeron processors, core 2 duo is 2 pentium 4 processors. so yeah, core 2 duo is better.

Actually the Core architecture has its roots in the Pentium M - Centrino processors. You know the 2.0ghz ones that outperformed the 3ghz P4's? Furthermore those have their roots at the Pentium III architecture. :)
